So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George, illustrated by David Small

All kinds of people have served as the President of the United States. This book, filled with hilarious cartoons (including one of a president being hoisted out of a bathtub by a crane and another of presidents dressed as cheerleaders), relates some of the similarities and differences among many past U.S. Presidents.

I read this with my daughter, Amber, who is 8. We learned a lot of trivia about the presidents, from who was oldest, who was fattest, who played instruments and who had pets. Of course, I’ll probably forget it all. It really emphasized that the presidents were all individuals, not cookie cutter politicians. More important, though, it made history and the presidency fun and interesting. One of my favorite parts was the little one sentence summary of each president’s term in the back of the book.

For the record, Amber gave it 3 out of 4 stars.
