The Box Car Children (60th Anniversary Edition) by Gertrude Chandler Warner

Orphaned and alone but determined to stay together, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden set off on their own and turned an abandoned boxcar into their home.

Amber, who is 8, loved it and is asking for more of their adventures. It’s aimed at kids and mine, at least, enjoyed it thoroughly. So, for children, apparently the magic still holds after 60 years. As an adult, however, it didn’t live up to my expectations. The situation seems very improbable; life in the forest is too easy; the girls do all the household chores, while Henry goes off to work at the doctor’s house. It’s a very sugary-sweet tale, but I’ll be reading more of them as long as she wants to.
