I ran into a couple of new-to-me words this week. Well, one is new and one I thought was worth looking up, since I only had a general idea. They are both from “They Took My Lord Away” by John Donne in Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter.
conventicle: an assembly of an irregular or unlawful character; an assembly for religious worship ; especially : a secret meeting for worship not sanctioned by law
“we may (mis)take a conventicle for a Church”
execrable: utterly detestable; abominable; abhorrent; very bad
“execrable and blasphemous oaths”
See what other words were “discovered” this week at Bermudaonion’s Weblog.
Both of those words are new to me. Thanks for playing along.
I’m pretty sure I’d come across “execrable” before, but “conventicle” is definitely a new one!
Conventicle is a new one to me. Probably won’t ever use it in conversation though 😉
I used to teach John Donne (in high school) and I still don’t know those words! Here’s mine:
