Mag-Blast is a space-themed card game in which each player tries to blast the other players from the universe. Each player assumes command of a race of beings whose powers are signified by the Flag Ship card at the center of their battle formation. The Flag Ship is surrounded on four sides with attack ships from the Ship Yard, up to 3 ships per side. On your turn you discard cards, draw back up to five, call for reinforcing ships (by playing combinations of 3 cards), and then play as many attack and defense cards as possible. Once you blast away an opponent’s outer ship protection, you may attack his Flag Ship, hopefully destroying it, and eliminating it from the game. In the third edition,  the unique “Make a Silly Noise or Miss!” Blast Targeting System will be accompanied by the even sillier art of renowned cartoonist John Kovalic. John Kovalic’s work has appeared in many games, but never before have his bubble-eyed heroes faced bug-eyed space monsters!

    My thoughts:

This is the game I ruined last Saturday. I basically forgot to make the “whiz-bang” sound, so my shots didn’t count, so I threw a fit and quit. Of course, then everyone quit and we really don’t know if it was any fun or not. We had been playing for a while before this, though, so we did know how the game worked. I had been trying to at least say “bang” even if I didn’t do any true sound effects. I just can’t do the stupid sounds games, and it probably didn’t help that I was pretty tired. The problem is, it seemed like it could have been a fun game, shooting each others spaceships, destroying the mother ships, but everyone was wimpy about just attacking and downing ships, maybe because it was the first time we played. And then there’s the “Make a Silly Noise or Miss!” rule, which basically made it horrible, in my opinion. I would play it again, but only if we leave out the stupid sound effects. Actually, if other people want to make them, fine, as long as I don’t have to.

If you’re interested, you may have to search a little to buy one. It looks like it’s out of print.

Seems like half the games you guys play are out of print.

We played 6 Nimmt on Friday night with folk who had never played Category 5 or the down-hill skiing version of the game. It went over well, although I dominated… It’s one where a little of experience goes a long way. But, the rules are so simple that there’s no room for whining or argument. Afterward, we played a seven player game of Red Dragon Inn, which is always fun. Some day we’ll play it as a full-on drinking game with varying beverages to match the cards. It’ll have to be a “nobody is driving home tonight” night, though.
