One of my favorite sci-fi authors (Sharon Lee) has declared June 23rd Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers Day.

As she puts it:

So! In my Official Capacity as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, I hereby proclaim June 23 Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day! A day of celebration and wonder! A day for all of us readers of science fiction and fantasy to reach out and say thank you to our favorite writers. A day, perhaps, to blog about our favorite sf/f writers. A day to reflect upon how written science fiction and fantasy has changed your life.

So … what might you do on the 23rd to celebrate? Do you even read fantasy/sci-fi? Why? Why not?

What can I do to celebrate? Maybe a post about fantasy I’ve read or would like to read, or why I enjoy fantasy novels. It could also be a good excuse to read The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein, which has been on my shelf for a while at a friend’s recommendation.

I read a lot of fantasy, including traditional fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, etc.  For me, it’s total escapism, a different world, with new rules, amazing creatures and people with abilities I can’t even dream of. Sometimes there’s some sex and romance thrown in, which doesn’t hurt either. There’s some great kids fantasy too, like Harry Potter, Spiderwick, and some of the Magic Tree House series, that I can share with my daughter.

I don’t read much sci-fi. I don’t really know why not, probably because I usually don’t like sci-fi movies, and I’ve got them hooked together in my head for no good reason. The sci-fi I’ve read, I’ve enjoyed.

What about you? Join in at Booking through Thursday.

I think you should read more Scifi if you enjoy it. It would be good for you. Matter of fact, you should forget about the movies you have seen in the past and try them again also. If you keep an open mind about them you might like them also. Like on Saturday night. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, do you know what I mean?

  • Forgot to mention Heinlein in my list of favorite sci-fi writers! I loved his “Stranger in a Strange Land” when I read it many years ago, and I’ve had “Harsh Mistress” on my TBR list for quite a while. Maybe I’ll pull it out and read it for the 23rd, too.
