Fired Up by Jayne Ann Krentz

I’m a fan of the Arcane Society series. This is the 7th and I’ve read each of them. I know what to expect from the series, and enjoy them. If you haven’t read the series, I would probably start with one of the earlier ones. This one does not give you much of the back story; it expects you to already know a lot about the society members.

Take two people with special talents, add a touch of danger, physical attraction, respect and love, and you’ve got the formula. This one takes place in modern times. Chloe Harper is a private investigator who can read dreamlight and access dream psi. Jack Winters is the man who needs her help. He is convinced he is falling prey to the family curse and his only hope is to find the Burning Lamp and a woman who can work it before he becomes a monster. The two are immediately attracted to each other and of course, that leads to extraordinary sex.

She knew that he was riding the same sensual high. He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest. She could hardly breathe, but who needed oxygen? What she needed was Jack. And in that moment she knew that he needed her just as urgently, at least for now. (pg. 202)

And you have the requisite Nightshade operatives searching for the same lamp, putting both Chloe and Jack in danger. Can they trust the Arcane Society and J&J, groups both of them have been evading for their own reasons.

I like that Chloe was competent, up to the challenge, realized her own issues but also willing to take a chance with Jack. Jack never doubted that what he felt for Chloe was real, which was nice for a change. There really wasn’t much emotional or sexual tension in the story, but the external conflicts made up for it. It’s a fun read, but not earth-shattering.

For fans of the series, Fallon Jones meets someone in this one. Romance doesn’t exactly blossom, but at least there’s hope.

This is also the first of the Dreamlight trilogy, which will follow the men with the Winters curse and the women who can save them. The third in the trilogy will be under the name Jayne Castle and take place in her Harmony world, but I have never read any of her futuristic novels.

Challenges: 100+, A to Z, Romance Reading

My copy was borrowed from the library and the above is my honest opinion. I am an Amazon associate.
