Dottie at Tink’s Place has a Monday Morning Flash Fiction challenge that I’m enjoying. Each Monday a new picture prompt will be posted and if you choose to participate you post your story on Friday – 350 words, give or take. I don’t like this one as well as my last couple, but here you go.

Just a Dream

Fiona woke with a gasp, sitting straight up in bed. “What’s wrong?” Jackson asked groggily.

“Just a dream. Go back to sleep.” She kissed his forehead.

After he began gently snoring again, Fiona stood up, slid her feet into slippers, and wrapped her warm, deep green robe around her. She padded down the stairs into the kitchen, where the nightlight provided a dim glow. She methodically heated a mug of milk and added several scoops of cocoa mix. Only then did she allow herself to sit at the small table and think, as tears ran down her cheeks.

Andi was dead, that much was obvious in the dream. Her body lay across gray stones, eyes unblinking, and Thoorin’s sword was by her side, blood-stained. So, Thoorin had killed her. Though devastated, Fiona was not surprised. Her sister had known she was playing a dangerous game, infiltrating Thoorin’s organization. A man as powerful as Thoorin was bound to discover that Andi had an agenda of her own, that her purpose was to keep Thoorin from gaining control of the Council. His past was too tainted by deaths and crimes, his current goals too self-serving, to believe that the reformed image he was presenting to the city was true. If he was elected Council leader, he would have little trouble convincing the most arrogant members that it was time they exercised their rightful power, dominating and imposing their will on all who stood against them. There were those who would gladly follow him, who have been waiting for a leader who could take on the opposition. The war that currently took place behind closed doors, would be out in the open. The city would become a battleground.

Fiona smiled ruefully. It was not a battle between good and evil, she knew, even though she would like to classify it that way. She and he were different, and she liked to believe that she valued all life more than he did, that what she did was for the benefit of all, but she also knew that she was capable of doing horrendous things, if she felt it was justified.

Come daylight, she needed to make phone calls to those she trusted. They needed to meet, to make a plan. Andi hadn’t been able to provide them with Thoorin’s strategy, but they couldn’t waste any more time. She had to gather her forces, as she was sure he was gathering his.

And Jackson. She had to protect him.
