R. I. P. VIIAutumn is in the air. Soon, the leaves will start changing, the days will get cooler, and I’ll be craving hot chocolate and apple dumplings. It’s also the season for Carl’s annual reading event, R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril.  As he says, “There is a wistful scent upon the air and the mood generated by this time of year turns my thoughts toward the mysterious, towards stories with gothic undertones, towards darkened streets and death and the men and women sent to detect those who do these dastardly deeds.” September and October are all about the darker stories, mysteries, thrillers, dark fantasies, Gothic novels.

Peril the FirstThis year I’m signing up for Peril the First: Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature.

I’ll keep a list here, in addition to marking my reviews as part of the event.

  1. The Preacher by Camilla Läckberg
  2. Grandad, There’s a Head on the Beach by Colin Cotterill
  3. How to Date a Henchman by Mari Fee
  4. The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny
  5. Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich
  6. Wicked Autumn by G. M. Malliet
  7. The Hangman by Louise Penny
  8. Bullet for a Star by Stuart Kaminsky

I’m also signing up for the Peril of the Short Story, but I’m changing it slightly to fit my own needs. Short stories, yes, but I’m going to include any of the darker fairy tales I read this season here, too. And trust me, there are some that totally fit.

  1. “The Willful Child” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
  2. “The Snake and the Princess” by  A. H. Wratislaw
  3. “How Some Children Played at Slaughtering” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
  4. “The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
  5. “The Vampire Skeleton” retold by Kathleen Ragan
  6. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving

Peril on the Screen

I’m also signing up for Peril on the Screen. I have a couple of movies I want to watch that will fit in quite nicely. I hope David doesn’t mind.

  1. The Woman in Black (2012)
  2. Elementary
  3. Grimm
