night before christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

Robert Sabuda takes the classic text and adds his own amazing pop-ups to it in The Night Before Christmas. The poem itself is a classic, one that’s read every year. And Sabuda doesn’t take any thing away from that, he adds to it. The text is clear on each page and it flows like it should. Sabuda’s pop-ups in mostly white but with touches of green and red accent the text. I am always amazed by Sabuda’s work. The color and shapes for the most part are simple but the way he engineers them is so complicated. They are so delicate that I would worry about little hands ripping them.

Aren’t the reindeer gorgeous? The village scene at the end is absolutely lovely, too.

I think this is a great book to read aloud as a family, maybe on Christmas Eve, but not one to let little ones play with alone. It’s also a great gift book.

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”
