Z is for Zwergpinscher

The zwergpinscher is a small breed of dog, originating from Germany. Because the resemble the reh, a small deer found in German forests, these dogs are often called “Reh Pinschers.” They make great house and alarm dogs. It’s also the final dog in Walk the Dog by Bob Barner, a cute board book.

This tail-wagging book features an alphabet of jumping, barking, playing dogs. From Airedales to Zwergpinschers, the 26 breeds gather to form one big, boisterous, barking pack. Bob Barner’s colorful collage illustrations and a bouncy, fun-to-read-aloud text make this book a playful introduction to man’s (and kid’s) best friend.

When Amber was little, she loved to pretend to be a dog. She would bark at everyone, including strangers in the store. It was awesome. But she would have loved Walk the Dog by Bob Barner.

The basic text is simple. Each page starts with Walk the dog, walk the dog, then has an action that dogs do, like scratch or dig or chase. The repetition would be perfect for little ones and the illustrations are bright and simple. It’s in the pictures that the dogs are named, starting with Airedale, and working its way through the fox terrier and a pug. At the end, all 26 dogs get together. In the back, there’s a little tidbit of information about each breed, like what I noted above about the zwergpinscher.

I can see this as a good read-aloud for little children and I bet they’re joining in on the “walk the dog” by the end. I can also see using it with a group of young kids and getting to act out some of the actions. It would be fun, if noisy.
