top ten tuesday

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted at The Broke and the Bookish, is about books from our childhoods/teen years that we loved and would like to revisit. This is a list of books/series I remember loving. Some I’ve re-read since, some I haven’t, and some I know would lose a lot if I re-read them now. It’s funny, though, overall the genres I leaned toward then are the same ones I enjoy now. I tried to arrange my list in time-line order, more or less.

1. The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree by Stan Berenstain – All of the Berenstain Bear books were good, but this was a favorite.

2. Favorite Tales of Monsters and Trolls  by George Jonsen –  I still pull this one out on occasion for Thursday’s Tales.

3. The Gammage Cup by Carol Kendall – Adventure, magic and “rebels” who save the day.

4. Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene – Who didn’t want to be Nancy?

5. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle – I remember loving it, but that’s about it. I need to re-read it.

6. Sweet Valley High novels by Francine Pascal – Teenage trash, but fun. The YA choices were not exactly up to today’s standards, I don’t think.

7. The Baker Street Dozen edited by Pj Doyle and E.W. McDiarmid – I’ve loved Sherlock Holmes for a long time.

8. Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie – I still love classic mysteries.

9. Silk Vendetta by Victoria Holt – I read every book by her our library had.

10. I’ll Take Manhattan by Judith Krantz – Another author I read a bunch of.

I could keep going, but 10 it is. What books would you like to revisit? Some of these are the covers I remember, some aren’t. And I couldn’t find a decent cover of The Baker Street Dozen, so I went with a different Holmes collection.

Funny, but I have a copy of the Nancy Drew mystery The Secret of the Old Clock right here in my office. It belonged to my sister but I retrieved it from my mother’s house when I was gathering up books. I might have to read that one.

  • You have several that I like. First, the Berenstain Bears – my daughter loved those books and we had all of them or all that were published when she was younger. She took them with her when she left home. And, of course, Nancy Drew. I didn’t read Agatha Christie until I was in my late teens or 20’s, but loved her books. I referred to Victoria Holt in my list too – Bride of Pendorric – my first, but I read many others and many other authors in that particular vein – Gothic romance. Nice list!

  • Those are some good ones. I was never into mysteries, but my ten-year-old read a ton of Nancy Drew books last year. And I well remember Sweet Valley High and the Babysitter Club books- but don’t really care to revisit those. Lately I’ve been remembering some picture books, about a little witch called Dorrie? Haven’t seen that in a long time.
