My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme.

Today, Maureen is asking what our favorite book that made us cry is. I’m skipping the question. I don’t enjoy crying at books – or movies, or commercials, or tv shows. I’m a bit of a sap and cry way too easily at fiction. I actually avoid books that I know are going to make me cry, which I know means I miss out on a lot of excellent ones, but I’m okay with that. Of course, often enough a book catches me off-guard, leaving me in tears. Really annoys me. I will say the book that most recently made me cry was The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. The crew of the Wayfarer had to do a hard reset of their AI and she reverted to factory default, losing all her personality and memories. Yep, I cried over a computer system.

  • Seems like you’re not skipping the question! 😉 I definitely don’t enjoy crying too, and I’m an easy crier too. But one of my favorite books, and that made me cry is ‘Me Before You’. A beautiful book!
Thanks for joining and signing up!

  • I am like you in that I cry at everything. Most of the time I don’t care about overlooking things if I know it will make me cry. The only thing I have recently was watching A Dog’s Purpose, but I also didn’t like the things that came out about how they “trained” the dogs.

I haven’t read that one, but will have to look for it. I’m the opposite of you in some respects. I like to read books that make me cry. I have always been more controlled when it comes to expressing my emotions and work in a field where I deal with heavy issues on a daily basis in which I cannot let emotion get in the way. I have to keep myself apart from my emotions. Being able to cry when I read or watch movies has become a release for me of sorts. As a result, I am sometimes drawn to books that make me feel strong emotions.

Now, I prefer not to go through the ugly cry that leaves me feeling hungover for days after . . . That kind of crying I can do without! Haha. It’s why I don’t like to read books where an animal or child dies.
