The FrightFall Readathon technically ended Monday, but the post-readathon ended yesterday. The one main “rule” of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart).

Here are all the scary, thriller and mystery books I read this month. I am not big into horror, so most of mine really aren’t that scary.

  1. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
  2. “The Diary of a Madman” by Guy de Maupassant
  3. Peril at End House by Agatha Christie
  4. The Lady in the Cellar by Sinclair McKay
  5. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
  6. From Russia with Love by Ian Fleming
  7. Cherringham #1-3 by Matthew Costello and Neil Richards
  8. Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie
  9. After the Funeral by Agatha Christie
  10. The Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie
  11. Death and Dancing Footman by Ngaio Marsh
  12. Cherringham #4-6 by Matthew Costello and Neil Richards
  13. Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie

13 seems like a pretty good number for a “spooky” readathon. I also started Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Origin by Dan Brown, but I haven’t finished them yet.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle was definitely my favorite. It’s just an excellent story, spooky but touching. My least favorite was From Russia with Love. I think from now on I’ll stick with the Bond movies and skip the books. The Lady in the Cellar was surprisingly good. I don’t read much true crime, let alone true crime from the Victorian era, but it was interesting and easy to read. The Christies and Marsh are comfort reads to me and perfect for this time of year (or any time of year).
