Quarriors

When I get to the tough letters of the alphabet, I tend to turn toward our games shelves, and Q has to be one of the toughest. Therefore, I present Quarriors from WhizKids. Here's the blurb: A unique blend of strategy and chance featuring a revolutionary dice building game mechanic! As a Quarrior - a mighty mystical warrior - only you have the power to capture dangerous quarry from the untamed wilds! But your rivals plot against you! They will send their own Creatures and Spells to destroy your Quarry before you can deliver them to Empress Quiana and claim your reward! Summon your Creatures and protect them from your foes and you will earn Glory for yourself. The first player to earn enough Glory will be hailed as the Champion of the Empress. Pittsburgh Pirates 5K Home Run

This morning I ran in the Pirates Charities Home Run 5K. It was a blast, as usual. It's a nice, fairly flat course, half of which runs along the river, that ends in PNC Park. The place was packed, there were 3623 finishers, it is organized very well with staggered start times. It does tend bottleneck at the end, with runners entering the park to get to the finish line and those leaving not in much of a hurry. After the race, there is so much food - hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, some other kind of meat sandwich - ham or sausage, I think, bananas, cookies, chips, donuts, and water of course. I'd tell you about before the race, but we got there right on now due to some unanticipated construction on the parkway, Bang for your buck, this has to be one of the best 5Ks. It's an awesome morning, runner get a free ticket to one of the next four home...

Nightingale

"The Nightingale" was the first fairy tale I though of for the letter N. It was written by Hans Christian Anderson and published in 1844. "Something, it appears, may be learnt from books.” "The Nightingale" tells the story of a Chinese Emperor who learns from a book about his land that there is a bird in the woods just outside his garden who sings so beautifully it is truly the treasure of the kingdom. When he orders a nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid leads the court to where the bird is found. On the way, the courtiers hear a cow and frogs, and the girl has to tell them those are neither is the song of the nightingale. When asked, the nightingale agrees to appear at court. The Emperor is so delighted with the bird's song that he keeps the nightingale at court in its own golden cage. It is let out occasionally, but can only fly with ribbons attached...
