Origins Game Fair 2014

We go to the Origins Game Fair in Columbus every year. This year we thought we weren't going to be able to, but Amber traded a couple of band things around and we got to go after all. The day didn't start out so well - they were only doing day badges for Saturday not family passes and the line was ridiculous. once they got that straightened out a little and we actually go in, it was a fun day. We ate lunch over at the North Market, then checked out the vendors and played games all afternoon. We walked down the road for dinner and then played one more game in the evening. We picked up the new Ascension: Realms Unraveled, a stand-alone expansion. Ascension is probably one of my favorite games right now. Amber got a cool bag, a new dragon for her collection, and the obligatory Cthulhu expansion for Smash-Up. One I didn't pick up but wish I had was...

Y is for Yggdrasil

Y is for Yggdrasil

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is an immense tree that is central in Norse cosmology, in connection to which the nine worlds exist. Yggdrasil is an immense ash tree that is central and considered very holy. The gods go to Yggdrasil daily to assemble at their things. The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations; one to the well Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one to the spring Hvergelmir, and another to the well Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the wyrm Níðhöggr, an unnamed eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór. But in our house, when we are talking about Yggdrasil, nine times out of ten, we're talking about the board game. Yggdrasil Published: 2011 by Z-Man Games and Ludonaute Designed by: Cedric LeFebvre and Fabrice Rabellino # of players: 1-6 Suggested Ages: 13 and up Playing time: 75 minutes Purchase: Amazon (But it's selling for $98, which is way too much. Game Night: Nuts!

Game Night: Nuts!

Yeah, we played Nuts once a couple of weekends ago and I just don't think it's going to hit our table very often. It sounds cute enough. You're a bunch of squirrels gathering nuts, because squirrels love nuts, will do anything they can to get their paws on nuts, espcially big nuts. And they hat it when other people try to mess their nuts. Yeah, you see where this is going, right? Players gain a Nut card from the Nut card draw pile at the beginning of their turn but they can also grab other's Nuts by using a Grab card. Of course, people have Defense cards to block you from touching their nuts or make you steal from someone else instead. The goal is to gather 20 points worth of nuts. Each Nut card has a value on it from the measly 1 to the awesome Nut Henge worth 7 points. I like the pecan pie, personally. The cards have titles like Grab The...

Game Night: Shadowrift (and a thanks to Longbow Games)

It's been a while since I've had a boardgame post, but I had a couple of things I wanted to talk about. First, a few weeks ago we went to the Origins Game Fair in Columbus, always a great time of games, friends and food. And I won a t-shirt. Kinda cool, huh? My thanks to Longbow Games who were there promoting their upcoming game Hegemony Rome. We picked up one game while we were there, Shadowrift from Game Night Productions. The game's designer, Jeremy Anderson, sat with us for about an hour, explained the set-up and rules, and played a full game. It was a lot of fun, a cooperative deckbuilder where you work as a group to defeat the monsters killing folks in your town. Haven Town is facing total annihilation at the hands (and teeth) of a horde of monsters from beyond the Shadowrift. You the heroes must band together to drive them back.  To do this, you will need powerful spells,...

Game Night Quote

Every once in a while I like to share a quote I've found about a boardgame. Today's is from The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente. "Death, I don't know what to do." Death climbed up into her lap, sitting primly on her knee, which had already begun to darken and wither. "It's very brave of you to admit that. Most knightly folk I happen by bluster and force me to play chess with them. I don't even like chess! For stategy Wrackglummer and even Go are much superior. And it's the wrong metaphor entirely. Death is not a checkmate . . . it is more like a carnival trick. You cannot win, no matter how you move your Queen." "I've only ever played chess with my mother. I wouldn't feel right, playing with you." "I cheat, anyway. When their backs are turned, I move the pieces."  (pg. 149, ARC)...
