Game Night: Isla Dorada

It's been a while since I've talked about a new game, but this is one David got for his birthday. We've played it several times since then and it's definitely worth mentioning. In the middle of the 30's, an expedition of treasure hunters crashes its zeppelin in the middle of an unknown and mysterious island where legends tell that several old and powerful civilizations have left many sumptuous treasures. Each player is one of these brave explorers who joined the expedition with old maps giving clues on where some of these treasures can be found. However, it is clear that the land is barely known and dangerous, so, all explorers decide to travel together, in one solid group by hiring beasts of burden and exotic items in the native villages while trying to avoid the many dangers of the inhospitable land of Isla Dorada... Which one of these brave explorers will find the most valuable treasures, avoid the numerous curses and accomplish it's...

Fun and Games

I love boardgames. We play at least one night a week, sometimes more. If we're heading out of town for a vacation or just for the weekend, we always take two or three games with us. Classic games, family games, Euro games, I like them all. Friday was game night at our house, when David, me and some of our friends get together and play boardgames, and we actually played one of my favorites, so when I saw the Fun and Games Blogfest, I had to play along. My three favorite games: Dominion- This one is currently my flat-out favorite. You start with a 10 cards, the same as everyone else. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards that you buy. So you basically build your own deck, with actions and victory points and money. You're in control of what your deck consists of for the most part, although some of the expansions do let you screw around with...

Game Night: Cupcakes of Catan

A good game and cupcakes! Settlers of Catan is a great game, and we actually played just a couple of weeks ago. (I lost.) I don't know if I could play with cupcakes as the tiles; people may end up not getting any sheep because I ate them all. It would be fun to try though, if only I baked. Or maybe cookies. I could buy them and then just do the icing myself....

Game Night – The Beginning

At Giant Fire Breathing Robot, the question was asked: Who instilled in you your love of gaming? The answer's easy. My parents. We played games all the time when I was a kid, from Candyland when I was little to Monopoly, Scrabble,Life, Pictionary, Backgammon, etc. Then, probably in high school, we started playing Euchre all the time, lunch, breaks, restaurants, whenever. Fast forward to when Amber was born and we moved back to town after being gone for a couple of years. I don't exactly know how it developed, but I think that instead of going out on a regular basis, it became easier for us for our friends just to come over to our house. And when you get together every week, you need something to do and games are perfect. Our tastes have broadened, last week for example we played Dominion and Death Angel, but it's still playing games.  (Why can't any of the space marines be women by the...

Game Night – Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War

Last weekend, the guys played Axis and Allies, so instead of playing I sat on the couch and read. I don't play A & A. I don't enjoy the game and they never seem to play all the way to the end which would just annoy me. And it takes forever. We had been talking about playing Race for the Galaxy with takeovers, but then Amber ended up going to Texas for the weekend, which meant it was perfect for a looong game instead. We play Race for the Galaxy a lot, with all the expansions including the latest, The Brink Of War. I enjoy the game. It's a card-based game where you basically build a galactic civilization using game cards that are worlds or social advances or technological developments. The third expansion started takeovers. You could conquer other players military planets with your military. We tried it like twice, and that's it. It was confusing and kind of boring for...
