Game Night – Halloween Edition

Okay, so with Halloween tomorrow, I was thinking about some of the perfect boardgames to play that kind of go along with the holiday. The first one that popped into my head was Betrayal at House on the Hill. I talked a little about it last year, but Avalon Hill has re-issued it, with a refreshed haunt book and some new items. New spooky nights await you and your friends! The creak of footsteps on the stairs, the smell of something foul and dead, the feel of something crawling down your back – this and more can be found in the exciting refresh of the Avalon Hill favorite Betrayal at House on the Hill. Arkham Horror has horror right in the title. Investigating the odd happenings in town and fighting otherwordly monsters - perfect for Halloween. I talked some about it last fall, too. It is the roaring 20‘s, and while there’s electricity in the air, unnatural storms are...

Game Night – Tichu

You still have a couple of days to enter to win the cardgame Rowboat. Tichu Designer: Urs Hostettler Year: 1991 Players: 3 - 10 Time: 60 - 90 minutes Ages: 10 and up This is a great card game - a little confusing the first few times you play it. First I'll give the blurb since I find it a little tough to explain. Partnership climbing card game -- object is rid yourself of your hand. The deck is a standard 52-card pack with four special cards added. When it's your turn, you may either beat the current top card combination or pass. If play passes all the way back to the player who laid the top cards, he wins the trick and can lead the next one. The card led determines the only combination of cards to be played on that trick. So if a single card is led, then only single cards are...

Game Night Quote

I haven't actually read this book, but had to share the quote I found. "Wait,” he said. “That’s not a word.” I looked down to where, in a moment of desperation, I’d played zixic on a triple-word-score space. “Uh, sure it is.” “What’s it mean?” “It’s sort of like…quixotic, but with more…” “Bullshit?” I laughed out loud. I’d never heard him swear before. “More zeal. Hence the z.” “Uh-huh. Use it in a sentence.” “Um…‘You are a zixic writer.'" “I don’t believe this.” “That you’re zixic?” “That you’re trying to cheat at Scrabble.” He leaned back against my couch, shaking his head. “I mean, I was ready to accept the whole evil thing, but this is kind of extreme." — Richelle Mead (Succubus on Top) What can I say? It made me laugh....

Game Night – Rowboat

Rowboat Manufacturer: Moosetache Games Year: 2010 Players: 2 - 4 Time: 60 minutes Ages: 13 and up Ah, summer's over here in eastern Ohio. The temperature has been in the sixties and low seventies for a while now. I love autumn, but I kinda miss summer too. However, this winter when I'm longing for the beach, for warm weather, I can at least pull out Rowboat, a very pretty trick-taking card game. These are some of the "face" cards, but there are also the standard 2-10 of the four suits, shells, waves, oars and maps. Isn't the nautical theme beautifully done? The game play itself is reminiscent of several other card games, but put together in a unique way. The dealer lays cards out on the table face up until all four suits are showing. This is called the Tide. The number of the cards varies each game. Each card in the deal represents a round and is the card that controls trump for that round....
