On DVD: Still Life: A Three Pines Mystery (2014)

Few movies, including those made for TV, live up to the books they're based on. Still Life is no different - of course it doesn't help that it's based on the first book in one of my favorite series. Overall, though, I think they did a good job. I recognized all the characters immediately except one, who was just wrong, practically missing from the movie when she is a fairly prominent secondary character in the books. The town may not have been exactly how I pictured it, or the people for that matter, but I think it stayed pretty close tot he story, at least as much of it as I remember - I don't have the world's best memory though. I was pleased, glad I watched. I'd love to see them make more of the books into movies. My husband hasn't read any of the books, even though he may have heard bits and pieces from me along the way. He...

At the Movies: Lucy (2014)

Title: Lucy Director: Luc Besson Writer: Luc Besson In theaters: July 25, 2014  from Universal Pictures Genre: Sci-fi/Action Rating: R Rating: 2½ out of 5 stars A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. Lucy is not a good movie, but since we were using a gift card and just having a night out since Amber's out of town for the week, it was fun enough. First, you have to overlook that it's not actually true that people only use 10% of their brain, a "fact" the movie is based on. I'm okay with overlooking that, although I do think they could have made more or less the same movie with a different base theory that wouldn't have immediately turned some people off. It's like the movie is stuck. It wants to be an action flick, but how much action can you really have when the main character can control people, objects, is...

Thursday’s Tale: Maleficent (2014)

Title: Maleficent Director: Robert Stromberg Writer: Linda Woolverton In theaters: May 30, 2014 from Walt Disney Pictures Genre: Fantasy Rating: PG Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the classic Sleeping Beauty and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever. I'm a fairy tale lover and while Maleficent is a re-make of Disney's own re-make of Sleeping Beauty, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a gorgeous movie, from...

The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon. We, of course, went to see Muppets Most Wanted on opening weekend.  We had to wait until Sunday, though, because we went to a Winter Jam concert on Friday, which was awesome. I am a Muppets fan, have been since I was...

Movie Night: The Heat (2013)

Title: The Heat Director: Paul Feig Writer: Katie Dippold In theaters: June 28, 2013 by 20th Century Fox Genre: Action, Comedy Rating: R Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Purchase: Amazon DVD | Amazon Instant Video Uptight FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins couldn't be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. The Heat is a funny, female buddy-cop movie. Ashburn and Mullins are opposites. Ashburn is uptight, uncomfortable with people, all bottled up. Mullins is loud, obnoxious, but gets along with people at least some of the time. The one thing they have in common is that they both want to get the bad guy. At first, it's almost a competition, but eventually, predictably, they find working together as a team brings better results. And it is predictable. The plot is definitely not the reason to see this one - McCarthy and Bullock are. They're funny and fun to watch. The...
