A cup of warm chocolate

She looked forward to a cup of warm chocolate and a nice fire in the drawing room with Jack. When she stepped out of the carriage, however, Jack gathered her hand in his, brushed his lips over it, and said good-bye. Before she had a chance to protest, he'd dropped her hand and was taking long strides down the drive. (pg. 222, A Season of Seduction by Jennifer Haymore) A cup of hot chocolate in front of a fire does sounds wonderful this time of year. Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. But the wolves say

"But the wolves say that Man's first gift is imagination. And that is a kind of sight. They say that some of the humans have even flown with the birds of the air in their imaginations and dived with the mighty blue whale to the very depths of the deepest seas. But it is at the altar that you could find out." (pg. 341, The Sight by David Clement-Davies) I'm probably going to start this later today. Talking animals are not usually my choice, but it's for a discussion in one of my on-line reading groups, so I want to at least give it a chance. “It may interest you gentlemen to know”

"It may interest you gentlemen to know," said Foley, speaking with the ponderous dignity of one who is trying to conceal his emotions, "that the object of her affections, the man who has supplanted me in her life, is none other than the gentleman who lived next door—our esteemed contemporary, Mr. Arthur Cartright, the man who made all of the hullabaloo about the howling dog, in order to get me before the police authorities, so that he could carry out his scheme of running away with my wife." Perry Mason said in an undertone to Pemberton: "Well, that shows the man isn't crazy; he's crazy like a fox." (pg. 44, The Case of the Howling Dog by Erle Stanley Gardner) I actually wasn't planning on reading this one yet, but when I finished Bayou Vol 1 by Jeremy Love last night while waiting for Amber to be done with her piano lesson, this was the only other book I had in my...

The World Outside

Sometimes we must go outside the church to get nourishment—art, beauty, knowledge—which we can then bring inside to appreciate fully. The church once stood as a steward of culture, its patron as well as its guide. Education, science, art, and music all had their roots in a church community committed to God's will being done "on earth as it is in heaven." When we ignore the world outside the walls we suffer—as does it. (pg. 130, What Good Is God? by Philip Yancey, ARC) The last couple Christian books I've read have been pretty ho-hum for me. This one I really feel is worth my time. It's a compelling read and Yancey has some sound insights Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Play along. Scarlet Rubies

They were his signature, those pale, stark virgins with their scarlet rubies. It gave him a little shiver to think of them. They brought him millions he didn't need and the adoration he deserved. And no one but him knew their true worth. Soon there would be another. (pg. 135, Two Lethal Lies by Annie Solomon) I haven't gotten to this point yet, but I'm pretty sure there's a deadly secret connected to these paintings.
