Another Week in the Books

I actually finished a few books this week, so I've got a couple of reviews I need to get up. One is Green Like God by Jonathan Merritt, which really made me look at taking care of our environment in a different light. We had a really nice week. On Tuesday, after Amber's appointment we convinced David to play hooky from work for a couple hours. We had a nice lunch at the Olive Garden, Amber's choice, and then went for a walk in a park just up the road from David's office. Really a nice place. We got some of our early plants in the garden - lettuce, peas, onions. And my azaleas are blooming. They look gorgeous. On Saturday, Amber and I went to see the Pittsburgh Symphony. We actually got complimentary tickets- 5th row. It was the Cirque de la Symphonie show and was absolutely fabulous. Whoever thought of combining the cirque performers with the symphony was a genius. Not...

Another Week in the Books

You know, I don't think I finished a single book this past week. I take that back, I read a couple of books with Amber (10) that were short enough to read in one sitting, including Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema, which we've read several times a year since she was like 5. I posted a couple of reviews last week. My favorite though was The Chatham School Affair by Thomas H. Cook. It's probably not for everyone, but I loved it, even if it had me bawling at the end. My giveaways for Montana Legacy by R. C. Ryan and Flirting with Forever by Gwyn Cready are both still open, by the way. Besides watching the hockey play-offs, we had a nice week. It was gorgeous, so we got some yardwork done and some flowers planted. As soon as David gets the garden rototilled, we'll be planting some Romaine lettuce, peas and onions. Saturday, David, Amber and I...

The Past 604,800 Seconds

This past week was a lot quieter for me. I didn't post any reviews for books that I absolutely loved, although I did find the original "Little Red Riding Hood" fascinating. My giveaway for Montana Legacy by R. C. Ryan is still open. Nothing much going on at home. On Wednesday, Amber (10) and her Sunday School Class put on a puppet play for the evening church service. She helped with the scenery and did the introduction. This is one of the pictures she drew. Friday, we played games at our house as usual. We played Kingsburg with the expansion, To Forge a Realm, which adds a lot to the game. I'll probably talk about it for a Game Night post in the next week or two. Saturday was the Read-a-Thon, which I really enjoyed. There's nothing better than having an excuse to read all day and avoid chores. I finished a couple of books and had a lot of fun visiting other...

Weekly Recap

So, I've been thinking about doing kind of a weekly update on Mondays. I'm still thinking of a title for the post though. Suggestions would be appreciated. Last week I posted a couple of reviews, but my favorite book was The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill. I will definitely be reading more in that series. If you enjoy romances, I've got a giveaway going on for Montana Legacy by R. C. Ryan, which is nice if predictable. Friday, David, Amber and I went the Easter Treasure Hunt at the Oglebay Good Zoo. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, even the bears and the ocelot were up and moving around. The only downside was that it was so hot the chocolate started to melt. Later that day, we went over to David's parents' house to color Easter eggs. I think we ended up dyeing about 4 dozen. I'm not sure how many we'll actually eat though. Saturday we went to the Wheeling Nailers hockey game...

My weekend

We went Maple Sugaring this past Saturday at Oglebay in Wheeling, WV. It was a fun, interesting morning. We learned about maple sugaring techniques used by Native Americans, pioneers, and through modern times. It was a gorgeous morning for the walk along the trail to the different stations, and the event ended with a delicious pancake breakfast, featuring fresh maple syrup made from the sap of Oglebay's own trees. After that we headed down to Centre Market in Wheeling, home of my all-time favorite bookstore, The Paradox Bookstore. It's just stacked full of used books, all genres. I just love it there. I even love that old book smell, although Amber (10) did ask if she could wait outside on the stairs. David and I limited ourselves to one book each. Mine was Silent In The Sanctuary by Deanna Raybourn, but I can't remember what David grabbed, some old short piratey novel. Update: David's book was A Sword for Mr Fitton by...
