Day 6 of Writing201: Poetry

I’m participating in WordPress.com’s Writing201: Poetry that finishes up this week. "Grab your verse by both ends (or hands; your call), like a hero with extra big hair. Week 2  here we go!" Today is about heroes/heroines, ballads and  anaphora/epistrophe. This is what I came up with. Feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you think, good or bad. The Ballad of the New Girl She was the new girl in town, still a bit of a mystery. She had a lilt in her step and eyes full of glee She chatted with the ladies and danced with the fellows. She swam in the creek a and skipped through the meadows. She went to the picnic with handsome Johnny McCoy. She thought she was in love, but he was not a good boy. She gave him a few liberties and he took advantage. She was loud and clear and he flew into a rage. He threatened and smacked her, but she stood her ground. She took care of her problem and he was never found. She was the new girl in...

Day 5 of Writing201: Poetry

I'm participating in WordPress.com’s Writing201: Poetry that finishes up this week. "Day 5 is upon us: clear your foggy mind, embrace absence, and paint with words." This was last Friday's assignment. The theme was fog, but the style was elegy and the device was metaphor. I kept trying to write an elegy and just had to eventually give up, so we've got fog and that's about it.  And I'm not real thrilled with it. fog the fog by the river obscures the world around us as we drive on across the bridge off the edge of the map into the land of dragons and fairies where the mist hides possibilities where cars break down and best intentions fail where dreams live and breath beside the nightmares until the sun burns off the magic ...

Day 3 of Writing201: Poetry

I'm participating in Wordpress.com's Writing201: Poetry that runs this week and next. "Day 3 is here — and so are questions of trust, acrostics, and internal rhymes."   Cinderella Covered in grime, toiling on Innocent, lovely, provoking jealousy Never complaining, always hoping Dreaming of going to the ball Encountering a godmother granting a wish Reveling in a gown and lovely coach Enjoying the evening, running at midnight Leaving a slipper for him to find Loving, marrying, trusting a prince And living happily ever after  ...

Day 2 of Writing201: Poetry

I'm participating in Wordpress.com's Writing201: Poetry that runs this week and next. "On the menu today: Journeys, limericks, and alliteration." I ignored the alliteration part and I realize the limericks would be booted out of any limerick contest, but it's what I've got today. Blackbeard Blackbeard was king of the sea, before his ship all others would flee. He buried his treasure, took more for good measure, then lost his head to the Royal Navy.   The Neighbor Jerry was friendly and quiet But the police didn't quite buy it. They knocked down the door, searched floor to floor, and found her locked in a closet. The Road The road stretches out, long and straight, calling us, begging us not to wait. The stars are pale; the chips are stale, but still we leave, heading across the state. ...

Poetry Prompt: Water

I'm participating in Wordpress.com's Writing201: Poetry that runs this week and next. Each weekday, they are providing a post with a prompt, a form of poetry and a poetic device. Mind you, I'm not a poet, but I thought it would be fun to give it a try and maybe learn something in the process. "Today, let’s write a poem about water. And/or a haiku. And/or use a simile." Here are my attempts:   Alone Alone, frozen, like an icicle hanging from a neglected porch. Fishing The bass jumps, splashes just a foot from my bobber which floats lazily. ...
