castawaysThe Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand

Description:

Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy’s closest friends for what will be revealed.

My thoughts:

To me, this book is like a soap opera. You’ve got love, loss, grief, the hint of a mystery, drug addicition, secrets and affairs in these pages, all set against a beautiful summer in Nantucket. You’ve got the present and the present. You’ve got the story from each living character’s perspective. Each of the individuals in the story is affected by the deaths of Greg and Tess in their own way and Hilderbrand does an excellent job of letting us see their feelings and understanding how they all got to this point. It wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, or glass of iced tea as the case may be, but it is a perfect match for this warm weather.

Visit Elin Hilderbrand’s Nantucket for lots of fun goodies.

This tour is huge. Make sure to check out some of the other stops.

  • I thought the character development was excellent! I was a bit put off by the lack of focus on how the kids dealt with the loss of Tess and Greg, but when I realized the point was really how the adults handled it, I was able to let that go.

Not my usual read, but I thought it was well done; Yes, like you, I would have liked to have been at the beach reading it!

  • Perfect description… Soap Opera.. but you know.. I sort of think it was cool for me to be messing in others lives.. I am so NOT a drama person… so it was fun to view others drama.
