I want to thank Rita Herron, author of Dark Hunger, for answering a few questions for me today. You can see my thoughts on the book below and keep reading for a chance to win a copy of the book for yourself.

Thanks again Rita for answering a few questions today. I really appreciate it.

What draws you to writing romance? Why paranormal romance in particular?

Once I started reading romance, I was hooked, so it seemed natural that I would write romance. Before reading romance though, I’d always enjoyed mysteries/suspense. After reading Tami Hoag’s Cry Wolf, I knew that was the type of book I wanted to write, one filled with great characters, an interesting setting, page-turning suspense, and romance —  one that had a happily-ever-after ending. I’m also drawn to romance because I like the optimism and hope that it offers. Our world is filled with so much dismal news, that I think it’s important that we escape, and that we see couples and families overcome obstacles. That we believe love conquers all.

About the paranromal – as a child I grew up watching The Outer Limts, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, and the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. The paranormal elements intrigue me and add another layer of interest because they represent another type of mystery element, and the fear of the unknown. I also like dark and spooky tales. As a writer, they also offer more unique storylines!

What inspires your writing? Where do you get your ideas?

I’m inspired to write simply because I love great stories of all kinds, real or fictional. Having grown up in the South, storytelling was a way of life, and I’ve always been intrigued by folk legends and myths, especially pertaining to different types of people, cultures, unusual landmarkes and settings.

Ideas come from everywhere – television, other books (both fiction and non-ficition), magazine articles, news stories, people and their lives, characters that stand out (real life or fictional), etc. Sometimes just a word, phrase, picture, a trip, etc. can spark the seed of an idea. Then I begin the “what if” game in my mind and take it from there.

The series the Demonborn was inspired by the idea of writing about the battle between good and evil – I think everyone has both sides to them to an extent, and wanted to write heroes who had to struggle with that inner battle while also fighting it on an external basis through crime-fighting.

Dark Hunger is the second in the Demonborn series. Can you tell us a little about Quinton and his brothers?

Quinton and his brothers are tough, sexy, alpha guys who fight crime. They’re also Dark Lords – their father was a descendant of Satan; their mother an Angel of Light, goodness. Their mother separated the brothers when they were young because their father had succumbed to the dark side, and she feared he would turn the boys as well. Together the Valtrez brothers have the power of great good – or great evil. And in the series, their father has risen as the leader of the underworld and wants his sons by his side.

On another note, what authors and/or books do you absolutely love?

For suspense: Tami Hoag, Karen Rose, Lisa Jackson. I also read across genres and love Stephanie Bond, Jennifer LaBrecque, Jennifer St. Giles, Wendy Wax, Haywood Smith, and Raven Hart.

What are you reading right now?

I usually don’t read male authors but my agent recommended Denis LeHane’s book Shutter Island so I’m currently reading it. I’m also halfway through Wendy  Wax’s book The Accidental Bestseller and loving it!
