Celebrate! It’s National Punctuation Day!
Yes I’m a geek, and yes I have a favorite: the semi-colon. I was always afraid of them until recently, never knowing how to use them so just avoiding it altogether. After all, it’s not a necessary punctuation, like a question mark or a period, but I’ve come to love it. It’s a wink of a break, a stop but not a full-out period.
Amber and I were discussing National Punctuation Day at dinner yesterday and I mentioned that the semi-colon was my favorite, and she tried to make me pick another. The semi-colon actually happens to be her favorite too. She likes the way “semi-colon” sounds apparently.
“Sometimes you get a glimpse of a semi-colon coming, a few lines farther on, and it is like climbing a steep path through woods and seeing a wooden bench just at a bend in the road ahead, a place where you can expect to sit for a moment, catching your breath.” -Lewis Thomas
So, what’s your favorite punctuation?
I love it! Tell Amber you can share the same favorite punctuation!
I don’t know if it’s a kid thing or what, but she’s not very good at sharing favorites in general.
Personally, I like the apostrophe. It’s just exceptionally useful. O’re the course of a sentence, I’m inclined to use them in 3’s or 4’s. With so many uses, it should be everybody’s favorite; don’t you think?
Ooh- fancy.
I like the ellipsis.
In honor of National Punctuation Day, I’m not going to answer any work emails that aren’t properly punctuated. That’ll add some fun to my day.
That does sound fun. Unfortunately, a lot of the time my own punctuation is pretty far off.
I like exclamation points. So expressive!
And I use them so much more when I write than when I talk.
I have totally forgotten about them all, in Swedish “,” is not used that often and I just leave it out everywhere these days.
But hey, I like the semi colon too
Ah! I love the semi-colon as well. I also like the colon. But lately I’ve been pretty fond of using & instead of writing out and. I think I just like the loopy, cursive feel of it.
I hadn’t even thought of &.
I’ve always liked the exclamation mark.
I’d choose an exclamation point, but I do know I overuse them in my blog travels. The semicolon is one I’m always afraid of not using correctly.
Exclamation points seem to be the most popular.
I like that semicolon quote. I think my fav just might be the exclamation point! 🙂
I like the period. It makes such a statement.
Ha, ha!
