I’m a little sad the I isn’t for Ice Cream today, but none of my family wanted to go out for ice cream last night. Instead, I is for Iguanodon.

When my daughter was little she had a major dinosaur obsession. We had books upon books, and figures and stuffed animals. And of course there must a million dinosaur species, including the flying and swimming ones. One I remember though, is the Iguanodon, mostly because of its odd thumb. It has five fingers on its front “hand,” erect and spiked thumb used for defence or perhaps foraging, three middle fingers and a grasping fifth finger.

Even though no Iguanodons were featured in Jurassic Park, I’m taking today’s post to talk about seeing it in the theater this past weekend. (Tomorrow’s J is being held for a fairytale character/creature.)

In the early 90s I read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, I loved it, and went on to read The Lost World. And 20 years ago, like most people I knew, I saw Jurassic Park in the theater. I can’t say I remember much, if anything, of that experience, other than a couple of scenes, which apparently I didn’t even remember right, and that it was a good movie. We went to see the 3D mostly because our daughter had never seen it, and it seemed like a fun way to spend an afternoon. Wow, I’m so glad we went. I’m not one who tends to re-watch movies in general, but I think this is one of the few that deserve being re-watched. First, it’s just a good movie. It’s worth seeing again, especially on the big screen – the size of the CG dinosaurs, the settings, the landscape, I can’t imagine it feels the same on a tv screen. I though it might feel a little cheesy 20 years later, but it didn’t at all. It’s still impressive and even though I knew what was going to happen, it’s exciting and suspenseful. As some of you know, I’m not a big fan of 3D, but it really worked here. It was subtle, but enhanced the movie. I didn’t notice any of those odd moments. I almost forgot it was 3D, it just seemed right.

Jurassic Park is definitely worth it, whether you’ve seen it before or not.

  • We watched Jurassic Park again recently – not at the cinema though. It was on regular tv and even on the small screen I think it’s a great film.

  • I haven’t seen any of the Jurassic Park movies–gasp, shock, horror! I probably should some time. I’ve read some of Crichton’s other books, though, and they were good, so I imagine JP is at least a good read, if not a good movie.

At the moment, where current technology requires the wearing of special glasses to appreciate 3D (movies or TV), the best 3D movies are those that work in regular 2D. 3D gives my wife a headache, and I don’t want to have to wear special glasses just to watch TV! 🙂

  • Thank you for the recommendation to watch Jurassic Park! It hadn’t even been on my radar. I didn’t see it the first time it was in theaters, although I have read every one of Michael Crichton’s books. I will definitely check it out.

Cool fact also about the iguanadon having that odd little thumb. Dinosaurs rock.

  • I went and saw “Jurassic Park” last weekend. I was shocked how few people there were. I thought more would be as excited as I was. Oh well. Their loss is my thoughts. I fully enjoyed the movie even 20 years later. And I must agree, the 3-D fit with this movie.

  • I have had no desire to see a 3D movie until now! I cannot wait to see Jurassic Park in 3D, and maybe even in IMAX. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies!! (Loved the books too!)
