We have one dog, Scrappy. He’s about 7, now. He’s friendly, cute, and a little on the dumb side.

He’s also a bit – high maintenance. He had knee surgery when he was about a year old, has a bit of hip dysplasia, and tends toward ear infections. The first couple of years we had him, he had trouble with allergies that made his eyes swell up. He’s also always had trouble with hot spots, places that he would lick until all the hair was gone and they were red and raw. We tried lots of things, sprays, powder, prednisone pills, shots. It all worked for a little while, but eventually we got to the point where once we got rid of one hot spot he would start on another. It was driving him, and us, crazy.

My mom had heard radio commercials for Dinovite for years, and she mentioned it to us. Now, I assumed it was a scam and at $75 dollars for a 90-day supply, it’s expensive. Finally, though, we decided it was worth a shot. We bought a 90-day supply sometime in December, when he just healing up from his last hot spot. We followed the directions on the box, also changing his food to a higher quality, grain-free brand, Back to Basics. Actually, we mix the good food 2-1 with the old stuff. It’s a compromise – my husband isn’t fond of how expensive the dog’s food and supplements are. So, Dinovite daily with some of the Lickochops from the same company. Basically, I put a scoop in with his dry food, add some water, mix it up and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then I add some Lickochops, stir and serve. Scrappy ate it up from the first even though it looks disgusting.. He seems to like the taste. He’ll even lick the bits of gravy left off the side of the bows.. He seems to think it’s delicious and will even lick the extra bits of gravy from the side of the bowl.

Within a few weeks, his fur felt softer. It’s been about 3½ months now and we’re on our second box of Dinovite. For Scrappy it worked. He hasn’t had a hot spot in all that time, and his ears have been giving him less trouble. I don’t know if it was the food or the Dinovite or the Lickochops, but I’m going to keep them all, especially with spring and summer around the corner. I can’t say whether it’ll help your dog or not, but it definitely helped mine.

This is not a sponsored post, I was not compensated in any way. I pay the full price for my supplies and am not a Dinovite affiliate.

From Dinovite’s website:

Does your dog itch, scratch, shed, or stink like crazy? Have you tried creams, shots, antibiotics, steroids and lotions? Are you tired of spending, spending and spending at the vet’s? Is your cat miserable? Nothing works!  Maybe it’s not medical?  It could be a nutritional deficiency. Dogs and Cats need good nutrition so their bodies can function properly. Pet food is cooked at such a high temperature and intense pressure that many nutrients are destroyed. Your pet eats this nutrient-depleted food his whole life. When fed in this manner he can develop  horrible  signs of nutritional deficiency.

Horrible signs like:

Terrible itching
Sores and lesions
Crusty skin
Bad odor
Excessive shedding

Any of these can be signs of a nutritional deficiency. If this describes your dog or cat, the nutrients in our Dinovite supplements can help support good body function. Dinovite is a supplement. Dinovite contains delicate nutrients and digestive enzymes cooked out of your dog’s or cat’s food. These delicate nutrients can help with your pet’s nutritional deficiency.

  • I’m finding it interesting how many people are doing the Challenge–or at least some posts–on pet topics! Makes me want a dog even more, especially since my husband and I are dog-sitting for a friends’ dog right now. 🙂

Glad you figured out a way to get your dog back to good health!

  • Oh, poor darling! Yes, being a dog mom can certainly be tough sometimes…our Fiona is high maintenance too. She has had petit mal seizures since she was about four or five, and has had urinary incontinence since age seven or so. Luckily, medication takes care of both things quite well, and she will be ten in June. So I feel for you! But they do have a way of stealing our hearts, don’t they?

  • What a beautiful doggy!!
My babydog had hot spots when she was a puppy and nothing we tried worked either. Finally after about 6 months, she just stopped having them. Don’t know why, but was, and still am, very thankful!

  • Scrappy is so adorable! Our Max isn’t the brightest dog in the park either 🙂
Our dog growing up, Bridget, got hotspots a few months every year, sad, bloody bald spots all over. They would go away for awhile and then come back. I;m glad you found something to work for Scrappy!

We have a little wiener dog who also is not very bright. He does, however, LOVE to chase and bark at bright lights……or leaves…..or random plastic shopping bags floating down the street on a breezy day. Wouldn’t trade him for anything though! Our Rocky is pretty special!

Stopping by on the A to Z. Good luck with your Challenge.

  • My moms dog has allergic reactions every spring and summer. We end up at the vets every year and he even takes 1/2 a benadryl tablet in his food once a day through spring and summer. This seems like a good investment for him, and I’m going to share it with her and offer to split the cost. We love her little dog, Rocco, he’s bought her so much joy. I hate to think of him being in distress.

  • My German Shepherd was always healthy, but my cat had problems. We had to make sure he had healthy food. It helped him immensely. When he passed, we learned that he had an abnormal pancreas. Poor kitty. I’m glad you are taking good care of your dog. They are good friends!

  • This is good to know! We have an appointment on Sunday to start the process of hopefully getting a dog! (I am very excited!) The dogs I used to have had hot spot issues, too, so I totally know the hassle of them. I am glad you found something that works.
