I don’t read a lot of sci-fi. According to my shelves on Goodreads, I’ve read 13 books that I’ve classified as sci-fi in 9½ years. Four were last year though, which is interesting. I think my favorite sci-fi book, at least that I’ve read recently, was Arcadia by Iain Pears.

Arcadia is not strictly sci-fi. While it includes time-travel, dystopian and post-apocalyptic societies, it also has spies and cheesy romance. No space ships though. It’s not one I would usually have picked up, but I’ve been a fan of Pears for ages.

I’m not a fan of time travel, but I like the way time worked in this one. The past affected the future, but the future affected the past. You drop the glass so it shatters. The glass shatters, so you had to have dropped it. There were about three time-lines going. The base was 1960s London, but there are two possible futures: Anterworld, which feels like a typical fantasy world, and a dystopian world dominated by science and tech. The characters were well done and fit into their worlds. And the ending was perfect. The plot is complicated, and you would think it would be tough to wrap everything up in a satisfying way, but Pears managed it. It’s almost as if the ending came first and everything else had to happen to get there.
