I listened to just under 30 audiobooks last year, which was a little down from the year before. I like audiobooks a lot, so it’s really tough to pick my favorite. A lot are good books, period, regardless of if you read them in print or listen to them on audio, presuming the narrator is at all decent. Others are probably better in one format or the other.
One of my favorite series is Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache mysteries, and I always listen to them on audio (except #1). The series takes place in Canada, but with all the French names and phrases, it flows so much better on audio for me than it would in print. The same is true of Keigo Higashino‘s Detective Galileo series, except the names and places are Japanese. Honestly though, both of these series would be just as good in print, I just enjoy the sound of someone else reading them so fluently.
One book that I listened to that I don’t think I would have enjoyed nearly as much in print was Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song by Sara Bareilles. she reads the collection of essays and sing pieces of a few of her songs along the way, and you just can’t duplicate that in print.

I have yet to listen to a book. I really need to…soon!
I don’t know. I don’t think audiobooks are for everyone.
Yep you are right…probably not for me…
I think I agree!
Fav! That would be sooo hard
I agree. Of course a favorite narrator would be tough too.
I love audiobooks so picking a favorite would be difficult. My top 10 favorites of 2017 are here: http://irbratb.com/2018/01/03/top-ten-favorite-books-of-2017/
And I find it hard to think of a good audiobook versus just a good book in general.
Picking a favorite would be hard and would probably be based on the narrator for me.
The narrator rarely makes the book a favorite for me, but he/she can certainly ruin one.
For me whether I like the audiobook is because of the narrator. They make all the difference in the world and Phil Gigante, Kate Mulgrew, Davina Porter, Tavia Gilbert are some of my favorite narrators but there are so many others that need to be recognized and I can’t remember their names off hand. How good the book is, is important as well but the voice of the narrator plays a significant role and yes sometimes it is fun to listen to a book if their are hard words to pronounce but sometimes the narrator doesn’t pronounce things correctly and that’s annoying )
I tend to want the narrator to disappear into the books. I do associate different narrators with different series, but I care more about a bad narrator than a really good one.
You definitely can’t reproduce something like Sara’s book in print. That’s awesome. I’m not a big audiobook person because I tend to tune out way too easily, so I have to really focus. I think it takes more time for me to listen to the audiobook than to read the book in print.
I agree. It does take longer, but I can listen while I do things like the dishes when I couldn’t be reading in print. I don’t have must trouble focusing although sometimes my family gets a bit annoyed when I’m doing things around the house with my earphones on.
I really want to listen to Louise Penny’s books. I have to get to them!
It’s probably one of my favorite series.
I only listened to new audiobooks last year. I’m a newbie when it comes to audiobooks. I’m planning to listen more this year. Thanks for sharing your favorites. ❤️
Wow 30 audiobooks.. That’s amazing! I always plan on listening to more audiobooks, but in the end I never do. The one I did love was ‘The Silent Waters’ by Brittainy C. Cherry. I couldn’t stop listening to that one.
Thanks for signing up and sharing your favorite.
Sara Bareilles’s book sounds amazing. I may have to give it a try.
