Vacations to exotic islands, murderous train rides, thrilling cross-country chases – just some of the ways I’ve traveled by reading.
Here’s my top ten books featuring travel in no particular order.
- Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie – As a mystery lover, I have to include this classic mystery aboard the train.
- Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – I loved reading about Gilbert’s travels through Italy, India and Bali and her journey to self-discovery.
- Have Gun, Will Play by Camilla LaGuire – Fun western mystery where a pair of young married gunslingers, one of my favorite literary couples by the way, are hired to escort a child and her toys to a safe haven.
- The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny – I fell in love with Haida Gwaii when Inspector Gamache took a short trip there as part of his investigation.
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – A hilarious journey through the galaxy.
- The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan – A cross-country quest to save the world, standing beside loyal friends and facing evil monsters. Oh and the gods are, well, the gods.
- Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner – A beautifully written book about a woman who escapes to the quiet luxury of a hotel in Switzerland.
- Saving Grace by Pamela Fagan Hutchins – A woman escapes her life by taking a vacation in the Caribbean and decides to stay.
- Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen – Train travel is a must for the circus.
- Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny – Corwin has to travel through the Shadows to reach the throne of Amber.
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
I haven’t read all of you picks, bu Percy made my list too! I would not have thought to add Water for Elephants, but I like it. Totally works.
Nope…haven’t read any of those. Some of them are on my TBR list–this is becoming a pattern for today’s topic.

I just saw someone carrying a copy of Hitchhiker today, and I wanted to stop her and ask her how much she was enjoying it. I hope she was enjoying it.
I want my daughter to read it. I think she would love it, but I don’t want to “force” it on her.
Water for Elephants is an excellent choice!
Some great choices there. I’ve never read Nine Princes in Amber… not sure how I missed that classic.
I have the Great Book of Amber that I’m slowly working my way through.
I love Douglas Adams!
I enjoyed Water For Elephants. The other books on your list look great. (I’ve like traveling to Australia via books lately.)
Pooh…yum…great books for vacation!
That as spoked to say Oooh…this is my iPad playing tricks on me!
Not read all of these. I wasn’t overly fond of Eat, Pray, Love I must admit but think Hitchhiker’s Guide is a great choice – you can’t get much more travelled. I also enjoyed Water for Elephants – I actually didn’t expect to enjoy it when I picked it up and probably went into the whole reading of it with negative feelings and then it just won me over.
Lynn 😀
I loved Nine Princes in Amber. I read the next four books, but none of them was as good as that first one.
Cool! I haven’t read any of these and I love to travel via literature.
Water for Elephants is a great choice. Great list.
Love me some galaxy hitchhiking~
