Picking my favorite biography is pretty easy. First, I don’t read many biographies. Second, there is one that definitely stands out: Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts by Julian Rubinstein.
Elmore Leonard meets Franz Kafka in the wild, improbably true story of the legendary outlaw of Budapest. Attila Ambrus was a gentleman thief, a sort of Cary Grant–if only Grant came from Transylvania and was a terrible professional hockey goalkeeper. During the 1990s, while playing for the biggest hockey team in Budapest, Ambrus took up bank robbery to make ends meet. Arrayed against him was perhaps the most incompetent team of crime investigators the Eastern Bloc had ever seen: a robbery chief who had learned how to be a detective by watching dubbed Columbo episodes; a forensics man who wore top hat and tails on the job; and a driver so inept he was known only by a Hungarian word that translates to Mound of Ass-Head.
Ballad of the Whiskey Robber is the completely bizarre and hysterical story of the crime spree that made a nobody into a somebody, and told a forlorn nation that sometimes the brightest stars come from the blackest holes. Julian Rubinstein’s bizarre crime story is so odd and so compelling that it is completely irresistible.
It’s a wild story and even more amazing because it’s true.
I guess there was a movie released last fall in Hungary telling Attila Ambrus’ story . I’d love to see it.

Oh I’m curious about that book. I haven’t read any biographies yet. Need to check out this book. I’m curious about The Steve Job’s.
i think the Steve Jobs one might be interesting too.
Interesting. True stories often make the best ones
That’s true. I don’t know why I don’t read more biographies actually. Maybe i don’t trust biography writer’s to tell a good story, but that’s silly.
I don’t really like biographies at all but if I was forced to read one…I might just have to choose yours…the title is very interesting!
I don’t read many. It’s not that i don’t like them, necessarily, I’m just not drawn to them.
I can not remember the names, one was by Malina? Oufkir, and then there were these two Chinese ones, how to even choose
I think I’ve only read like 8 biographies in the last 10 years.
I do enjoy biographies and have never heard of that one so I’m jotting down the title.
I read it back before I had a blog, so it’s been a while.
I must read more biographies…my favorite one was the one about Natalie Wood. That was certainly a good one
I don’t know much about Natalie Wood other than that she “drowned,” but my daughter has a friend with that name, not named after the actress though.
I’m going to have to check this one out. It sounds like a good read.
I really enjoyed it.
This definitely sounds like an interesting read. I haven’t heard about this one before.
My favorite is definitely ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ by Lauren Graham.
