I’m not very good at staying focused, if I’m honest with myself. For example, about half an hour ago I was putting away Christmas things from my bookshelf and putting my books back out, but in the middle of doing that, I came down to post a few books on Paperbackswap, so that meant I was at the compute. Of course, I had to scan today’s headlines and now I’m working on this post. I still have empty boxes and half-full ones sitting on the floor upstairs, waiting. When I’m grocery shopping with David and Amber, I’m the one who wanders off, with some random thing catching my eye. At work, I’ll be doing something, get distracted and then end up going back to the file a couple of hours later. Or the next day.
I’m not necessarily a focused person in general, but I can get absorbed in what I’m reading. It’s not intentional, but sometimes a book will just grab me and I will end up reading for hours until I finish, without realizing how much time is passing. It doesn’t happen often, and the last book I can remember getting that absorbed in is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Last night though, the last couple chapters of The Devotion of Suspect X had me totally caught in its spell.
What was the last book that had you completely absorbed?
I can get distracted very easily but because I’m very used to multitasking due to the nature of my job, I manage quite OK. But believe me, there are days when I just hop from one thing to the other, leaving stuff half done and lost track of what I did. I’m sure you know what I mean. 😉
Totally understand.
…..the Kelly Gay books, those were amazing. But honestly I find it really easy to get sucked into a book. Which is strange cos I can hardly concentrate on anything
I know what you mean, I tend to have a short attention span. The last book that had me totally hooked was the last one I read actually. The Lotus Eaters.
I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak had me totally absorbed, and that was a couple of years ago, I think in 2007. I have enjoyed so many books since, but that was the last one that I can recall that truly made me look at the world in a different way.
I loved his The Book Thief.
I get distracted so easily it drives me crazy. I’m in a reading slump right now so I wish a book would grab me like that. The last one I remember being absorbed in was Beach Roses by Jean Stone.
I love hearing the books that you all got lost in. Gives me a few I should add to my to-read list.
I got caught up in The Tea Rose last year. Now I’m afraid to pick up the sequel. I have an infant now!
