X has to be one of the toughest letters to work a post around. Today, all I've got is a cool xylophone solo I found on YouTube.

A couple of weeks ago, we went on a guided hike at Raccoon Creek State Park. This is a waterfall we saw in the Franklin Mineral Springs area, toward the end of our almost 5-mile hike. Amber took the photo for me.

My mom's favorite flavor of fudge is vanilla, so she had to pick up a slice when we stopped at the MainStreet Fudge & Popcorn Company in Berlin, Ohio on Saturday. Amber chose Butterfinger and we took peanut butter home for David. There were three cases full of flavors and even more popcorn choices. I admit it, we go to Amish Country for the food.

The Untamed
By R. S. Thomas, 1913-2000
My garden is the wild
Sea of the grass. Her garden
Shelters between walls.
The tide could break in;
I should be sorry for this.
There is peace there of a kind,
Though not the deep peace
Of wild places. Her care
For green life has enabled
The weak things to grow.
Despite my first love,
I take sometimes her hand,
Following straight paths
Between flowers, the nostril
Clogged with their thick scent.
The old softness of lawns
Persuading the slow foot
Leads to defection; the silence
Holds with its gloved hand
The wild hawk of the mind.
But not for long, windows,
Opening in the trees
Call the mind back
To its true eyrie; I stoop
Here only in play.

I have mixed feelings about Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. Some are just so moralistic and some just too sad. "Thumbelina," however, has a happy ending and though there are a few sad moments it's overall an enjoyable story. The version I read was from Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, translated by Mrs. Henry H. B. Paull, 1875.
The tale opens in a rather traditional way with a woman who desperately wants a child. She goes to a fairy for help and the fairy sells her a barleycorn which she plants in a flower-pot. It grows a lovely flower and when the flower opens, a tiny girl, Thumbelina, also called Tiny, emerges. Thumbelina has a lovely life with the woman until one night, when she is asleep in her walnut-shell cradle, she gets carried off by a toad who wants the miniature maiden as a bride for her son. With the help of friendly fish and a butterfly,...
Sand
Sand sifts through my toes.
Alone, where water meets earth,
The sea calling my name.
Darkness hides my sins.
The moon listens to my sobs
and the sea calling my name.
