More Space Pirates

Passing O'Malley's throne, Morgan turned left into the corridor, finding it vacant but for two women standing at the far end, apparently guarding the quarters where Lady Brit had been taken after her branding. Morgan approached silently along the corridor's wall, her bare feet making not the slightest sounds, until finally she spied the large doorway on her right that led to Colleen O'Malley's quarters. A Touch of Sci-Fi

"How are the inertial dampers treating you, my Lord?" asked Tink, looking gleefully over her shoulder at Jon. Clearly charmed by the mischievous slavegirl, Jon smiled and patted her on the shoulder, saying, "Smooth sailin', Missy. Yeh be one a' th' best pilots I ever seen, little one." (pg. 110, Captain Bonny Morgan by Robert "Doc" Gowdy) I haven't gotten very far in this sci-fi novel yet, but it seems like it should be a fun one, kind of an irreverent, erotic space adventure. Game Night – Ad Astra

Ad Astra Designers: Bruno Faidutti, Serge Laget Manufacturers: Fantasy Flight Games, Nexus Editrice Year: 2009 Players: 3 - 5 Time: 60 minutes Ages: 13 and up This is not my favorite game set in space. That would be Race for the Galaxy, but Ad Astra's fun enough to play occasionally. Basically players explore the galaxy searching for new planets. Most planets produce a resource, allowing you to build colonies, factories and more ships. Sometimes, however you will run across an alien artifact that can give you a distinct advantage. The turn system is unusual. Each player has a handful of cards allowing different actions like exploring, building and trading. At the beginning of the round, these action cards are placed face down on the main game board on one of fifteen slots, whatever is open at the time. The number on the slot indicates the order in which that action card will be resolved. Since all players may be able to benefit from...

The Millennium Party by Walter Jon Williams

"The Millennium Party" by Walter Jon Williams Williams gives us a short, sharp look at the future in this brief story. Darien and his wife are celebrating their thousandth anniversary, but in this future world, everyone has multiple brains that they interchange, each with its own purpose. For the celebration, Darien slots the brain that holds only the good, loving, passionate memories, none of the disagreements, arguments hurts, reflecting their life together as "one enchanted jewel after another." The evening does sound perfect, the setting, food wine all customized just for the two of them, but for the reader the severe compartmentalization of each aspect of life is de-humanizing. People are the result of all their experiences, good and bad, all their roles. While it would be nice to choose what to remember, life would lose it's richness. We wouldn't cherish our relationships as much. It's disturbing, really, so different from how we process emotions, thoughts, feelings. You can find the short story...
