My favorite thing about summer is the weather. I love hot, sunny days. I like getting in the pool, working in the flowerbeds. I like tank tops and shorts and not having to wear sweaters all the time. And ice cream and watermelon. And baseball. I just wish we had more hot days this year. Overall, it’s been cool and rainy for summer in Ohio.

Today, Maureen is asking what our favorite book that made us cry is. I’m skipping the question. I don’t enjoy crying at books – or movies, or commercials, or tv shows. I’m a bit of a sap and cry way too easily at fiction. I actually avoid books that I know are going to make me cry, which I know means I miss out on a lot of excellent ones, but I’m okay with that. Of course, often enough a book catches me off-guard, leaving me in tears. Really annoys me. I will say the book that most recently made me cry was The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. The crew of the Wayfarer had to do a hard reset of their AI and she reverted to factory default, losing all her personality and memories. Yep, I cried over a computer system.

My Favorite . . Love Story

It’s been a while since I read it, but the love story that I though of first was Persuasion by Jane Austen. It’s classic Austen, witty and observant, but it’s also a “second chance at love” story. Anne fell in love with Wentworth over 8 years before the story takes place, but was convinced by a well-meaning family friend to break off the engagement. Fast forward, and they meet again. Both are older, wise, have made mistakes, but are still in love.
