I am not a huge animated movie buff. We watched a lot when Amber was little, but not so much anymore, except fairy tale remakes occasionally.  I’m not even sure what the last animated movie I saw was.

When I was trying to think of my favorite animated movie, one popped into my mind that I haven’t watched in ages: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It came out in theaters in 1988, but I feel like we probably watched it on video. I know it probably doesn’t count as a true animated movie, but it was the beginning of the “new” Disney animation era. The film is set in Hollywood during the late 1940s in an alternative timeline where animated characters really exist. The story follows Eddie Valiant, a private detective who must exonerate “Toon” Roger Rabbit, who is accused of murdering a wealthy businessman. The mix of live-action and animation was unique at the time and the characters, both live and animated are memorable: the funny, frenetic Roger Rabbit; his sultry wife Jessica; Valiant, the down-on-his-luck detective who hates toons. Characters from “rival’ studios appeared together, like Donald Duck and Daffy Duck and Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.

I read a lot of mystery/detective novels. I guess my movie tastes tend to mirror my reading tastes.

I should find it again. I don’t think I’ve ever made Amber watch it.

The Paradox Bookstore is my favorite bookstore. It’s in Wheeling, WV and is stacked full of used books, all genres. I just love it there. There isn’t even a cat to make me sneeze. I assume it’s still open – it has to be, right? I haven’t been there in a while. Maybe I should make a trip down and stop at Coleman’s Fish, too.

I’m not much of a traveller and really haven’t been to that many cities. There are some I love reading about, Venice particularly, but that I’ve never actually been to. I think my favorite city, at least of those I’ve actually been to, is probably Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is the city we’re closest too, about 45 minutes from downtown, so it’s where we head for a lot of performances and sporting events. It has three major league sports teams, hockey, football and baseball, and a minor league soccer team. The National Aviary is there and the zoo is very nice. We love the museums, especially the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Art, but the Warhol, the Heinz History Center, the Science Center, and the Children’s Museum. There’s the symphony and ballet, theaters and galleries, restaurants, parks and libraries. It has two inclines and, according to Wikipedia, 446 bridges.

Pittsburgh just really is a great city. There is always something to see or do and I’m glad we live close enough to go whenever we want.
