“It may interest you gentlemen to know,” said Foley, speaking with the ponderous dignity of one who is trying to conceal his emotions, “that the object of her affections, the man who has supplanted me in her life, is none other than the gentleman who lived next door—our esteemed contemporary, Mr. Arthur Cartright, the man who made all of the hullabaloo about the howling dog, in order to get me before the police authorities, so that he could carry out his scheme of running away with my wife.”
Perry Mason said in an undertone to Pemberton: “Well, that shows the man isn’t crazy; he’s crazy like a fox.” (pg. 44, The Case of the Howling Dog by Erle Stanley Gardner)
I actually wasn’t planning on reading this one yet, but when I finished Bayou Vol 1 by Jeremy Love last night while waiting for Amber to be done with her piano lesson, this was the only other book I had in my purse. And heaven forbid I sit there for 10 minutes and not read anything.
Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Play along. The rules are easy and I only cheated a little. Grab your current read, open to a random page, and give us two teaser sentences. Remember, no spoilers.
I purchased my copy and the above is my honest opinion. I am an Amazon associate.
“…speaking with the ponderous dignity of one who is trying to conceal his emotions” – perfectly captures this character and I love Perry’s reply.
Lol, I do think the world would have ended so good that you had a book with you
Glad you are enjoying the unexpected read. Nice to have a book handy when you’re waiting. Here’s mine.
So I have a question – are the books based on the tv show or is the tv show based on the books and how did I not know that one spawned the other?!
The TV show was based on the books.
LOL, of course you couldn’t sit there for ten minutes without reading. That would be a waste of time.
My teaser is here.
Great teaser! Ad yes, I am the same – how can I go anywhere without my book to read! For shame!
Wonderful teaser! I love Perry Mason – books and TV show both. This is one I haven’t read – must do something about that soon!
Very nice teaser – “crazy like a fox”
I know how you feel. I lament the stray minutes when I find my ereader has run low on batteries and I must entertain myself in my head with out literary guidance.
Thanks for stopping by my teaser.
Great teaser! I’m not ever read any Perry Mason stories yet, will have to try one someday!
Thanks for visiting my Teaser today!
Do you actually remember the TV show? I do – watched it faithfully. Might make the book worth a read.
Okay, I don’t actually remember the show. I think it ended almost 10 years before I was born, but I do remember bits that must have been on one of those channels that shows old shows.
The show was on before I was born too…..I watched it in syndication so that is not an excuse
So far I’ve only read one of the books but I have two more on my shelves waiting to be read.
