I used my Barnes and Noble gift card to get two books (and a coffee and cookie).

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady MartineMeet Benoît Courrèges, aka Bruno, a policeman in a small village in the South of France. He’s a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes all that. Now Bruno must balance his beloved routines—living in his restored shepherd’s cottage, shopping at the local market, drinking wine, strolling the countryside—with a politically delicate investigation. He’s paired with a young policewoman from Paris and the two suspect anti-immigrant militants. As they learn more about the dead man’s past, Bruno’s suspicions turn toward a more complex motive.

Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives in the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire only to discover that her predecessor, the previous ambassador from their small but fiercely independent mining Station, has died. But no one will admit that his death wasn't an accident—or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court.
Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her Station from Teixcalaan's unceasing expansion—all while navigating an alien culture that is all too seductive, engaging in intrigues of her own, and hiding a deadly technological secret—one that might spell the end of her Station and her way of life—or rescue it from annihilation.
It’s nice to get a variety of books. I hope you love these.
I think I will.
A Memory Called Empire has been on my wishlist, I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading!
I don’t read a lot of sci-fi, but it caught my eye.
I like the looks of both of these but especially A Memory Called Empire. Happy Reading!
It seems like a mix of sci-fi and mystery, which I hope will be enjoyable.
I like mysteries set in France. This is a new one to me.
Right now there are 13 in the Bruno series, so if I like it, there are plenty more to read.
I’m going off now to check out Amazon for Bruno, chief of police. And 13 more books sounds great. It’s worth giving the series a try.
