Not all books I enjoy are actually good. Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich falls into the category. I found it a fun, light-hearted romp, but I can’t say “this book is so good – you need to read it,” because honestly it’s not and you don’t. I listened to it on audio while running, doing laundry, walking the dog, and it was perfect for my purpose.
This is the second in a series and I did read the first, well listened to it. The set up is that Lizzy, a baker, and Diesel, a man whose job it is to find things or people are on the search for a set of ancient relics representing the seven deadly sins. Also after them is Diesel’s cousin, Gerewulf Grimorie, and the kicker is that all three are Unmentionables, people with enhanced powers. Lizzy for example can feel the magic in objects. Diesel and Wulf have all kinds of powers, including opening locks (Diesel) and burnig people’s skins (Wulf). In this installment, they’re on the hunt for the Luxuria Stone, supposedly infused with the power of lust.
Hijinks, hilarity, a monkey, a guy who thinks he’s some kind of medieval knight- it’s a lot like literary junk food. But I do love candy, and chocolate, and popcorn.
This one a had a scavenger hunt feel. Diesel and Lizzy had to figure out a clue, whether it be about a book of poems or a set of church bells, then follow where that clue led to the next clue and so on until they finally get the stone. Of course, the baddies are right beside them, or ahead or behind the whole way.
All the characters are over the top. Diesel is sexy, rough and tumble. Lizzy is sweet and in over her head. Wulf is evil. Lizzy’s friend Glo is the ditsy optimist, and I like them. They make me smile and laugh.

This was my fifth read for R.I.P. VII, a reading event embracing the ghastly and ghostly, mysterious and grim. It definitely involves the paranormal even if it is on the lighter side of RIP reading. R.I.P. VII is hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings.

…yeah no. I can read the Plum books, but I always disliked the in between books and now this Diesel series, i skimmed :/
That’s funny, because I hate the Plum books, no matter how much I think I should like them.
I know what you mean, but every book doesn’t have to be a masterpiece – it just has to bring you pleasure and it sounds like this book did just that.
I am in two minds whether I should read any of Evanovich novels at all. Junk books are sometimes good but only few and far between.
I don’t read her Stephanie Plum series, they just annoy me, but her older, kind of corny romances are a guilty pleasure.
Sometimes literary junk food is yummy. Nice review! I hadn’t heard of this series before.

I’ve wondered about her books. I haven’t read any, but I thought that they might be entertaining but not anything I would rave about. Someone once told me these types of books are like candy for the brain–or literary junk food.
I gave up on Evanovich awhile ago, but I always did love Diesel!
