My Favorite . . Series

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. I started writing this yesterday but never actually got around to posting it. I'll post my usual Thursday post tomorrow. I read a lot of series, mostly mysteries and some fantasy. It's really hard to pick a favorite. I love Ngaio Marsh and Agatha Christie, of course, and I can't wait for the finale of Robert Bennet Jackson's Divine Cities trilogy coming out in May. My current favorite though is probably Louise Penny's Gamache series. First, Armand Gamache is a great character, intelligent, introspective, caring, a detective who actually manages to have well-functioning relationships. Second, most of the books have the village of Three Pines as one of the settings. It's someplace I would love to live -...

My Favorite . . Sci Fi Novel

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. I don't read a lot of sci-fi. According to my shelves on Goodreads, I've read 13 books that I've classified as sci-fi in 9½ years. Four were last year though, which is interesting. I think my favorite sci-fi book, at least that I've read recently, was Arcadia by Iain Pears. Arcadia is not strictly sci-fi. While it includes time-travel, dystopian and post-apocalyptic societies, it also has spies and cheesy romance. No space ships though. It's not one I would usually have picked up, but I've been a fan of Pears for ages. I'm not a fan of time travel, but I like the way time worked in this one. The past affected the future, but the future affected...

When I started to think about my favorite books cover, I realized that I actually have a favorite series of book covers. I've never read any of The Selection series, the premise doesn't appeal to me, but I love the covers. My absolute favorite is the 3rd, The One. Isn't it gorgeous? What's your favorite book cover? My Favorite . . Childhood Memory

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. Today Maureen is asking about our favorite childhood memory, which is almost an impossible question for me. I had a good childhood, but I honestly have a terrible memory. I remember random things and trivia, but actual events not so much. So instead, and I hope Maureen doesn't mind, I'm going to talk about some of the stories I remember enjoying. I loved The Gammage Cup by Carol Kendall and it's still one of my favorite kids books. It's one of many I read to Amber when she was younger. I was a huge Nancy Drew fan and when I was in Junior High I devoured the Sweet Valley High books. Junior High is probably around...

My Favorite . . Holiday

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. My favorite holiday is Christmas. Not terrible original, I know, but I love everything about it. I love the lights and decorations, the music, the days off work and school. We usually try to do a special Christmassy thing each year. This year we went to the Sara Evans Christmas concert in Wheeling, which I enjoyed. We also went up to the Carnegie Museum to see the Neapolitan Presepio, which is definitely worth seeing if you get a chance. On Christmas Day, we always open presents and have French toast casserole at home in the morning. We go to church if it happens to be a Sunday. Then, we go to my in-laws' for lunch and my...

My Favorite . . YA Novel

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. I don't read much YA, so I looked at the books I have categorized as YA on Goodreads, all 17 of them from the past 9 years. Some I remember reading, most I don't. I think my favorite though is Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. "[Briar Rose] is a powerful, touching retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story. Before reading it, I couldn’t imagine how Yolen would connect the fairy tale with the Holocaust, but the wall of thorns becomes barbed wire, the prince has a real-life counterpart and the truth of the sleeping spell is a horrible reality. I shy away from Holocaust literature in general. I’m always worried that it will be too depressing, although so...
