Mailbox Monday

It's certainly feeling like fall today - and the Pirates are still playing baseball! It's been 20 years wince we had October baseball here. I don't have any tickets to the games :(, but I'm watching them on TV. At least the ones that aren't on the MLB channel. Alright, most of you probably could care less about baseball, so let's move right on to the books that found their way to my house over the month (or two). Welcome to Mailbox Monday, a meme started by Marcia of To Be Continued.  Gina of Book Dragon’s Lair will be hosting the meme for the month of October. Print/E-books Leaving Annalise by Pamela Fagan Hutchins (review) - from the author and Pump Up Your Book A Cruise to Die for by Charlotte and Aaron Elkins -  from Thomas and Mercer The Back Road by Rachel Abbott - from Thomas and Mercer Secrets and Lies by Christine Amsden - from the author and Pump Up Your Book The Case of...

Top Ten Books I’d Love to See as a Movie or TV Show

There are some books I would love to see as movies or tv shows, assuming that they do it it right and don't ruin the story or cast totally inappropriate people. Then there are some books that might actually work better as movies than they did as books. Now if some of these have already been made into movies or shows, I haven't seen them - and they were probably disappointing anyway. Top Ten Books I'd Love to See as a Movie or TV Show The Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny - Awesome characters and good plots. Actually, I think they're working on the first one. Missing Barbados by Willem Pain - with the tropical location and all the explosions/crashes, it seems like it might make a better action movie than it did book. 1222 by Anne Holt - the setting is rather small, a hotel, and the time a matter of days, but I think the atmosphere, being trapped with a killer might work well. How...

Playing Catch-Up in June

Playing Catch-Up in June

Summer's here! Softball games Ice cream Picnics Swimming in the pool Fireworks Jogging in the park Trips to the Lake Fishing Fresh veggies from the garden Grilling out And Playing Catch-Up I've got several reviews I should write and a whole batch of books sitting on my shelves or hanging out on my Kindle, both review copies and personal reads that I want to get to. So this month I've decided to focus on catching up- writing those reviews, clearing off my shelves, reading and giving away books. Here's my starting list. I know I've got a bunch more books, but these are what comes to mind. I'm not sure how much I'll get done, but might as well be ambitious. I do have a week off work when hopefully I'll have a lot of extra time to read. Reviews to write: Always a Princess by Alice Gaines A Plain Death by Amanda Flower Nevermore by William Hjortsberg Angels Flight by Michael Connelly Books to read: Seattle Cinderella by Gail Sattler The Lola Quartet by Emily St. John Mandel Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge Winged...

Fairy Tale Images: Rumpelstiltskin

Fairy Tale Images: Rumpelstiltskin

I don't remember where I saw this, but a couple of weeks ago, someone in the blogosphere did a post showing a series of images from place like Pinterest and Deviant Art, showing different scenes from Little Red Riding Hood and different ways of interpreting the story. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I thought it was a great idea, so wanted to share some more visual interpretations of today's tale, "Rumpelstiltskin." Rumpelstiltskin by Ithelda from f-yeahfairytales Rumpelstiltskin by LILIAOSIPOVA Rumpelstiltskin by lukeradl Rumpelstiltskin by NicholasAx An interesting variety of styles. I think my favorite is actually the first, because for me it shows how ridiculous the King's demand was, and want a mean man he must have been. I get that the young woman didn't really have much of a choice in whether to marry him or not, but poor lady, to be married to a man who had no compunction about locking you in a room to perform an...

Ohioana Book Festival 2012

Ohioana Book Festival 2012

I had a great time at the Ohioana Book Festival on Saturday, my annual Mothers Day weekend outing. I attended several panel discussions, listened to some great authors, ate from a food truck for the first time, and met up briefly with Stacy from Stacy's Books and her mom. Stacy is just as sweet and nice as I expected. It was so nice to meet her in real life, since I feel like I already know her from reading her blog. And for lunch I had the Dak from Ajumama, a Korean street food truck. It's savory pancakes filled with sesame grilled chicken, soy bean sprouts, garlic chives, mushrooms, and zucchini. Delicious! The highlight of the day for me is always the panels. I attended five, and enjoyed and learned something from each of them. Fiction by Women Several of the writers on the roundtable discussed the importance of research, by actually traveling and talking to people, participatin in on-line groups, reading books, even ones that you may not find at...
