Thursday’s Tale: Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Lion

I don't think I've ever featured a Br'er Rabbit story. Br'er Rabbit stories were told in the Southern US. I actually found this one because I was looking for hurricane tales. One day Br'er Rabbit was hopping through the woods when a great wind started to blow. Br'er Rabbit was busy watching the leaves swirling around in the wind and didn't notice that he was about to run right into a lion. Then Br'er Lion roared! Br'er Rabbit jumped way up the air, but as soon as his feet hit the ground, he knew what he had to do. "Run, Br'er Lion, run for your life! Can't you tell there's a hurricane coming?" Br'er Lion was an old lion, and he was also rather fat. "Br'er Rabbit," he said, "I'm too old and fat to run so fast. Can you tell me what to do to survive the hurricane?" "Well," said Br'er Rabbit, "you better lie down and get close to the ground." "The wind...

My Favorite . . Fantasy Novel

My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive. For more info: My Favorite Meme. I have enjoyed many fantasy novels over the years, from the Narnia series to The Lord of the Rings to Claire North's Gameshouse trilogy. Why are all my favorite fantasies series? Does it give the author more time to fully develop the world, to make me fall in love with the place and the characters? One of my favorites is City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett, the second of the Divine Cities. (I haven't read the third entry yet. I own it, but I'm a little afraid of what's going to happen.) A couple of bits from my review last year: "Our main character this time around is retired General Turyin Mulagesh. she may be one of...

Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew J. Sullivan

I admit it - I picked up Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore based mostly on the title and cover. I have trouble passing up mysteries centered in bookstores. While it was not really what I expected, I enjoyed it. I expected a lighter mystery, more cozy. While not gory or violent, this one is disturbing at times. Lydia is the only survivor of the night the Hammerman killed her friend and her friend's parents, but she hides this fact from everyone. She was a child at the time, but the Hammerman was never caught. Fast forward and now she's an adult, working at a bookstore, living with her boyfriend, who she has not told about her past. As the story opens, Lydia discovers one of the bookfrogs, Joey, has committed suicide in the book store. That would be devastating enough, but in his pocket he has a picture of Lydia as a child, with two of her friends, which is odd...

Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

Bookish and Not So Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. share exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things encountered during the week, etc.) Head over to her blog to link-up. 1. If you follow me on Instagram, you already know Amber won first place in the art show she entered. It's acrylic paint on canvas. 2. RIP XII started on Sept 1. Horror's not my thing, but my to-read list is pretty full of mysteries. 3. Amber started school this week. She'd didn't let me take a first day of school photo, though. Their football team has won the first two games. Friday the Alumni band is playing for pre-game; David and I are both playing, so we'll see how that goes. I think it should be fun. We have practice in the last afternoon, then a pizza and pop socializing time, followed...
