Pin It and Do It: From My Summer Fun Board

Pin It and Do It: From My Summer Fun Board

I'm going to sneak in one more pin this month. Last weekend, we went up to the lake and of course sat around a fire during the evenings. If you have a fire, you have to have s'mores, right? We picked up the standard graham crackers, Hershey's bars, and marshmallows, but I had seen a variation that used peppermint patties, so I picked up a package of those little ones. I tried them instead of the Hershey's bar pieces, and I have to say they were yummy. They didn't melt as much as the plain chocolate, but I kinda liked that, it made them a little less messy. Of course, I tend to like mint in general. I was the only one who tried the variation. Apparently, at least according to my daughter, you shouldn't mess with a classic. I disagree. I think I may have to try another variation next time- maybe the cinnamon toast s'more. I don't think...

Thursday’s Tale: Shrek! by William Steig

Thursday’s Tale: Shrek! by William Steig

Shrek was one of the favorite fairy tale characters mentioned a few weeks ago, so off I went to the library to meet Shrek, not the Shrek I know and love from the movies, but from the original story, Shrek! by William Steig. Shrek is an odious, ugly creature who stinks and spits flames. I will say though that he is very self-confident. He is kicked out by his parents and goes off into the wide world, repulsing everyone who crosses his path. He eventually meets a witch who tells his fortune, that he will meet a donkey who will take him to a knight. He will defeat the knight and win the hand of a princess even uglier than himself. So, he does defeat a dragon, ride the donkey to the castle, and eventually marries the princess. "And they lived horribly ever after, scaring the socks off all who fell afoul of them." I have to admit, I like the loveable...

Review: The Price of Silence by Kate Wilhelm

Review: The Price of Silence by Kate Wilhelm

I know when I pick up a Kate Wilhelm book to listen to or read that I'll enjoy it. They're not all perfect, but I like her style, her descriptions and the way she occasionally mixes in a bit of the paranormal with an otherwise perfectly ordinary mystery. In The Price of Silence, Todd Fielding accepts the editor position at a small town weekly newspaper, The Brindle Times. Todd, but the way is a strong female protaganist, the type of character Wilhelm excells at. she's smart, pretty and determined, but she has weaknesses too, just doesn't let them overwhelm her. When a local girl disappears, written off as a runaway by the police despite her mother's protests and those of her teachers and friends, Todd starts investigating and is alarmed to discover several girls have disappeared over the years in similar circumstances. And the modern crimes have an eerie tie-in to Brindle's past, a connection that may, at least in my...

A couple of evenings ago we were out and about, picking up some things before we headed to the lake for the weekend, and lo and behold the carnival was set up in the mall parking lot. So we stopped for a treat. We shared a funnel cake and an elephant ear. Too yummy! Saturday Snapshot...

Flash Fiction: Safe on the Beach

Flash Fiction: Safe on the Beach

Safe on the Beach "Leave me alone!" she had yelled, kicking out at him. He had held her wrist so tightly she would surely have a bruise by tomorrow. He had ripped her beautiful pink chiffon skirt. She screamed and struggled, but all his weight had been on top of her, holding her down on the sofa. She had left the party willingly enough, but that was not what she had had in mind. She had just wanted a break from the mass of people, a minute of quiet. She had been warned, though, keep your distance from Erik, but he had seemed nice and was so handsome. "Let me go!" A knock at the door interrupted him. He had quickly stood up at his father's voice, and she had fled, face burning, eyes to the floor. She ran down the first staircase she found, desperate to get away. Down and down the steps continued, until she slowed, not hearing any footsteps behind...
