Another Week in the Books

First of all, I want to thank Renee at Black 'n Gold Girl's Book Spot for passing this award on to me. It's so happy and certainly brightened my day. This past week I posted a couple of reviews, a cookbook, Family Feasts for $75 a Week, and a really funny collection of comic strips, The Knight Life. In addition to the giveaway for The Knight Life, I'm also giving away three copies of an audiobook, Eat the Cookie...Buy the Shoes by Joyce Meyer. We had a nice Memorial Day weekend. David's team won their softball game, 4-3. Saturday Amber went to a friend's house, so I went shopping with my mom. One of our stops was a grocery store I absolutely love. I'm always amazed by how much more variety than have than the stores in our town. My mom says I'm like Alice in Wonderland when I go there. We had a small cookout at our house on Saturday followed...

Did she die that day?

Hesitantly Abby asked, "Did the girl, Sammy, did she die that day?" "I don't know," Felicia said. "For Link the war ended that day; he never referred to her again." (The Deepest Water by Kate Wilhelm) They are referring to characters in a novel that Abby's father wrote, a book that includes a lot of details from his real life in a fictionalized way. When you're reading a book, do you ever wonder how much is drawn from the author's true life experiences? Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Play along. The rules are easy and I only cheated a little. Grab your current read, open to a random page, and give us two teaser sentences. Remember, no spoilers. I borrowed  my copy from the library and the above is my honest opinion. I am an Amazon associate....

Silot, a Valet by Felix Feneon

"Silot, a Valet" by Félix Fénéon My selection for today is a very shot story, twenty words, but rather amusing. It's about a valet and what he leaves, and takes, from his master's county home. It's a cute story. Take a second and read it at Fifty-Two Stories. Obviously, in that short a space, you don't get to know the character too well, but I originally found it a couple weeks ago and remembered it when I was wondering what to post on today. It sticks with you. Although I read it on-line, the story is included in Fénéon's Novels in Three Lines. John hosts Short Story Monday at The Book Mine Set. Head over there to see what he and others have been reading. The above is my honest opinion. I am an Amazon associate....

The Twelve Brothers by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

"The Twelve Brothers" by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Today's fairy tale is just chock full of goodies. We've got an evil father, a loving mother, a young innocent woman who marries a king, a mean mother-in-law, an enchanted cottage in the woods, people who turn into birds, an old mysterious woman. A little bit of everything really. The story starts off with a king and queen who seem happy enough and have twelve sons. Dad though tells his wife what will happen if the thirteenth child is a girl. If the thirteenth child which thou art about to bring into the world, is a girl, the twelve boys shall die, in order that her possessions may be great, and that the kingdom may fall to her alone. Apparently, he actually wants a daughter to pass his kingdom on to, which I found surprising. Nice change in that he values the daughter, but crazy too. He actually has the 12 coffins built and locks them...
