A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

I was looking for something shorter to end my October with and decided I couldn't go wrong with a Sherlock Holmes story. I'm sure I've read A Study in Scarlet at some time in the past, but didn't remember much about it. It's the first of the Holmes stories, the one where he and Watson first meet. Dr. John Watson is back from the war, in London and running a bit low on funds. He isn't able to afford a decent apartment but is introduces to Holmes through a mutual friend. Holmes, as we know, is a "consultant detective", consulted not only by private individuals, but also by Scotland Yard. Soon, Holmes is called to the scene of a murder, and he brings Watson along with him. We get to know a lot about Holmes. He's strange and brilliant and has developed his own methods of detection. Part 2 of this one goes a little amok, off into Utah and Mormonism...

The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

I listened to The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone while I was folding and taping newsletters the other day. I always like Sherlock Holmes, but I didn't love this one. First, he's already solved who the culprit is before the story starts; he just needs to find the stolen diamond, he knows who the thief is. Second, he uses a trick that he's used before and it's a large part of the story in both instances, I'm not a fan of the repetition. And the whole story takes place in Holmes' sitting room, which just isn't terribly interesting. I listed to an audiobook and the narration was okay overall, but sometimes I got a bit confused who was speaking. The reader had an accent that fit the story, but took a little while for me to get used to. Overall, this is not one of my favorites of the Holmes stories, but it's short and there's a little bit at the end...

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Hound of the Baskervilles was a re-read for me. I've read or listened to most of the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels over the years, but I always enjoy them. Sir Henry Baskerville needs Sherlock's help. He's inherited a house in Dartmoor, at the edge of the moor, in rather unpleasant circumstances. The former landowner, Sir Charles died of a heart attack, apparently while feeling from a giant hellhound, the family's curse. After a brief time in London, Sir Henry heads off to his new estate along with Watson, who has strict instructions to stay with Sir Henry and to especially never let him go out onto the moor alone. Holmes can't go with them because of some reason or other. We meet all the locals, including the servants of the house and the neighbors, a bug collector and his wife. To complicate issues, there's also an escaped convict lose in the area. It's a good solid mystery. Watson is his loyal...

The Boscombe Valley Mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle

I was going running/walking at the park the other night and didn't have anything to listen to. I found "The Boscombe Valley Mystery" on Audible's Mystery Channel and it was just the perfect length for how long I wanted to spend exercising. I have been a Sherlock Holmes fan forever, but I don't remember reading this one before. That doesn't necessarily mean I haven't though - I don't have the best memory. What seems like an open and shut case - James McCarthy killed his father - of course isn't and it's up to Sherlock Holmes to prove James' innocence. There's not much action, but we do see Holmes doing a thorough crime scene investigation, even making use of his knowledge of tobacco ash. I guessed who the killer was, although I didn't know all the ins and outs of why. For a short story, the motive is pretty complicated and I enjoyed the solution. Holmes softer side comes through a bit...
