I honestly thought I would enjoy Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. It's supposed to be clever and funny and I've heard the narrator does a great job. She does, but aside from that I thought the book was silly. Finlay is a writer who doesn't do much writing and the mother of two preschool children. Her house is a mess and her ex-husband just fired her nanny. So her life is running amok even before she's mistaken for a contract killer and ends up with a dead body in her garage. I think Finlay was supposed to be relatable and entertaining, but I found her mostly annoying. Yes, her cheating ex-husband was a jerk, but you have to take some responsibility for your own life. She made dumb decisions and yet everything worked out so well for her. And she has two attractive and intelligent men interested in her even though she seems to be permanently sticky and/or lying. I don't read a lot of horror, but once in a while once grabs my attention. Hemlock Island revolves around Laney Kilpatrick, an English teacher and thriller author who is recently divorced and is grieving her sister who lost her battle to cancer. She is raising her 16-year-old niece, Madison, and reluctantly renting her vacation home on a remote island to strangers. Things get out of control when the renters call her in the middle of the night to inform her that there are blood and nail marks all over the guest room's closet. Laney goes out to the house with her niece Madison. Her ex-husband, Kit, also shows up with his sister, Jayla. And then, we have Sadie, a former friend from high school, and her brother, Garrett, who is now a cop. The Lost Village is trying to be both a ghost story and a mystery, and it left me a disappointed overall. Sixty years ago everyone in the village of Silvertjarn disappeared, leaving behind only a newborn baby and the body of a woman who was stoned to death in the square. Alice grew up with the story, her grandmother's parents and sister disappeared that day. Alice is determined to make a documentary based on the events in the town, hoping to find some answers in the process. Alice is not very likable- I'm not sure any of the characters are actually- well maybe one, mostly because we know the least about him. Things go badly for Alice and her friends/crew pretty quickly. We've got creepy abandoned houses, strange noises, "accidents." The Lost Village really does provide great atmosphere. Something out there is scary, but we can't see it clearly.
