Welcome to today’s post for the A to Z Blogging Challenge. For each day, I’ll be sharing the opening paragraphs to a book that starts with that letter and is sitting on my shelves or my Kindle.
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
Prologue
Elantris was beautiful, once. It was called the city of the gods: a place of power, radiance, and magic. Visitors say that the very stones glowed with an inner light, and that the city contained wondrous arcane marvels. At night, Elantris shone like a great silvery fire, visible even from a great distance.
Yet, as magnificent as Elantris was, its inhabitants were more so. Their hair a brilliant white, their skin and almost metallic silver, the Elantrians seemed to shine like the city itself. Legends claim that they were immortal, or at least nearly so. Their bodies healed quickly, and they were blessed with great strength, insight, and speed. They could perform magics with a bare wave of the hand; men visited Elantris from all across Opelon to receive Elantrian healings, food, or wisdom. They were divinities.
And anyone could become one.
So, what do you think? Read it soon or give it away? Have you read it?
I’m not a big fan of fantasy novels but sounds like something my daughter might like…Look forward to F 🙂
Anyone could become one? Interesting!
Cute theme you have for A/Z. I would have to say for this one give it away; not usually in my genre of what I read 🙂

You have to read it
If i remember right, people really enjoyed it.
I haven’t read it, but as I read the prologue I kept waiting for the inevitable “but”. Instead, I got “and” (anyone could become one). I would be more intrigued if there was a “but”. 🙂
Yep, there’s a “but” at the end of the prologue. Of course I had to read a bit further. I don’t have it in front of me, but it was something like: but “eternity ended 10 years ago.”
Now, that’s more like it!
I’ve never heard of this book, and I’m a sci-fi/fantasy buff. Praise from Orson Scott Card definitely makes me take notice, and I was pulled into the writing right away. I’d keep it!
I must admit I haven’t read a book in ages. Sounds interesting though and also sounds like it might make a good movie 🙂
Not generally a fan of this genre and I’m afraid that the opening paragraph doesn’t change my mind.
I think I’ll probably try to read this one sometime this year.
