Autumn is in the air. Soon, the leaves will start changing, the days will get cooler, and I’ll be craving hot chocolate and apple dumplings. It’s also the season for Carl’s annual reading event, R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril. As he says, “There is a wistful scent upon the air and the mood generated by this time of year turns my thoughts toward the mysterious, towards stories with gothic undertones, towards darkened streets and death and the men and women sent to detect those who do these dastardly deeds.” September and October are all about the darker stories, mysteries, thrillers, dark fantasies, Gothic novels.
This year I’m signing up for Peril the First: Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature.
I’ll keep a list here, in addition to marking my reviews as part of the event.
- The Preacher by Camilla Läckberg
- Grandad, There’s a Head on the Beach by Colin Cotterill
- How to Date a Henchman by Mari Fee
- The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny
- Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich
- Wicked Autumn by G. M. Malliet
- The Hangman by Louise Penny
- Bullet for a Star by Stuart Kaminsky
I’m also signing up for the Peril of the Short Story, but I’m changing it slightly to fit my own needs. Short stories, yes, but I’m going to include any of the darker fairy tales I read this season here, too. And trust me, there are some that totally fit.
- “The Willful Child” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
- “The Snake and the Princess” by A. H. Wratislaw
- “How Some Children Played at Slaughtering” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
- “The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
- “The Vampire Skeleton” retold by Kathleen Ragan
- “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving
I’m also signing up for Peril on the Screen. I have a couple of movies I want to watch that will fit in quite nicely. I hope David doesn’t mind.
Want to join in on the fun? Head over to Stainless Steel Droppings to sign up.
That’s the perfect challenge for you! Have fun!
I should sign up for this since it’s all I want to do once October gets here. Have fun!
I enjoy this event too. I’m listening to The Little Stranger for Peril of the Group Read and I’ve committed to two books, but I might do more. And maybe a movie!
I do enjoy this event! Have fun.
I love this challenge too. Happy reading and film watching. I just watched Rosemarys Baby as part of Peril on the Screen and will post about it soon.
Great to see you here for RIP 7!!! You’ve made me totally hungry now!!! 🙂
I agree that there are many, many fairy tales that are as dark as anything else one could read for RIP, so your idea sounds perfect. I’d like to get to a re-read of Angela Carter’s fairy tale retellings in The Bloody Chamber collection but am not sure if I’ll work it in or not.
