Spotlight on Beethoven in Love; Opus 139 by Howard Jay Smith

Book Excerpt: Prologue: The Death of Beethoven Vienna, 5:00 pm, March 26, 1827 Outside Beethoven’s rooms at the Schwarzspanierhaus, a fresh measure of snow from a late season thunderstorm muffles the chimes of St. Stephens Cathedral as they ring out the hours for the old city. Ein, Zwei, Drei, Vier… Funf Uhr. Five O’clock. Beethoven, three months past his fifty-sixth birthday, lies in a coma, as he has now for two nights, his body bound by the betrayal of an illness whose only virtue was that it proved incurable and would, thankfully, be his last. Though his chest muscles and his lungs wrestle like giants against the approaching blackness, his breathing is so labored that the death rattle can be heard over the grumblings of the heavens throughout his apartment. Muss es sein? Must it be? Ja, es muss sein. Beethoven is dying. From on high, the Gods vent their grief at his imminent passing and hurl a spear of lightening at Vienna. Their jagged bolt of electricity...

Friend of the Devil by Mark Spivak

First a confession, I watch a lot of the Food Network, so I couldn't pass up a "culinary thriller." Friend of the Devil turned out to be a fun thriller full of drugs, sex and food. Not a bad combination. David is a writer who first meets  Joseph Soderini di Avenzano while doing a story. He is then hired to write the famous chef's biography and is summoned to the Chateau de la Mer, where the menu is amazing, the chef a brilliant, if often drugged-out, showman, and the hostess irresistible. Actually, that is my one complaint, how quickly David and Alessandra hook up. I guess they have to for the rest of the story, but it just seemed a little quick. Of course, everything at the Chateau is a little intense. For me, it wasn't a quick read. I'm not sure why exactly. The pacing was good and there was enough action to keep the story moving. I enjoyed the bits of history that Avenzano...

Spotlight on Fatal Reunion Ken Malovos

Book Excerpt: The phone rang at the suburban home of attorney Mike Zorich around one- thirty on a Sunday afternoon in October. Mike put down the crossword puzzle and hit the mute button on his remote. He could still watch the San Francisco 49er football game as the players ran around silently on the screen. He wondered who would be calling him at this hour. “Mr. Zorich, how are you? This is Detective Tom Kirkland, Sacramento P.D.” “Detective Kirkland, it’s been some time since we spoke.” “I understand you spent last night talking to the reunion party at the Sheraton.” “I did, but how would you know that?” “I have one of the alums here at the station and he told me all about it. In fact, he would like to talk to you. His name is Jason Robinson. We have him on an open homicide investigation. Okay?” “Yeah, sure. Put him on.” There was a pause and a couple of clicks on the other end of the line. “Mr....

Summer Heat Book Blast

Book Excerpt: From Protecting Her Pigg by Melissa Keir Arriving on the scene, the smell of smoke with the tang of gasoline assaulted my lungs. The building was a total loss. It bothered me to see something once so beautiful destroyed. “Sir, you can’t be here,” the officer I’d assigned to the perimeter yelled. Turning toward the commotion, I witnessed a tall, dark-haired man storming toward me with violence in his approach. Sizing up the advancing danger, I threw my shoulders back and met the man halfway. “This is my building. Who are you, and what do you know so far?” His gravel voice caused goose bumps to form on my skin. “I’m sorry, Mr…?” Up close, the man took my breath away. His features weren’t “pretty boy” beautiful, but striking. Chiseled chin, full lips, slightly curved nose. Must have been broken at one time. “Pigg, Lucas Pigg. And you are?” Caught staring at his lips, I almost missed the question. “I’m Lily O’Neill, chief arson investigator. We...

Spotlight: Banished Threads by Kaylin McFarren

Excerpt: A lone figure stood in the estuary lookout nestled in the trees above the North Sea on the Holderness Coast, waiting with restless anticipation as Gwen Gallagher approached the cliff's edge. A quick adjustment to the night-vision binoculars allowed the watcher a closer view of the twenty-eight-year-old secretary as she savored the last autumn sunset she would ever see. The crisp, cool air picked up speed, leaving her long black hair sailing like a ghostly pirate's flag behind her. It lifted the hem of her black skirt slightly, exposing her white shapely legs and black suede booties to the wintry elements. Her pale blue eyes swept across the landscape, appraising the beauty surrounding them. She raised her chin toward the darkening sky and smiled, obviously believing the note she had received, inviting her here, had come from her married lover. As Gwen moved even closer to the edge, the watcher inhaled a deep breath. All that remained between this ludicrous woman...
