Mailbox Monday – 8/12

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists. Tell us about your new arrivals by adding your Mailbox Monday post to the linky at mailboxmonday.wordpress.com. Amber and I stopped at Barnes and Noble the other day to buy a gift for my brother and of course I couldn't leave without a book for myself....

Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe

Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe

Velocity Weapon is really entertaining - a bit long perhaps, but a lot of fun. So why have I been sitting here looking at this blank review on and off for days now? I don't want to give away any of the plot points and those are what make the book interesting. The blurb above gives you the basic setup. Sanda is awesome, tough, resourceful, vulnerable. She was clearly the strongest of the characters and the parts from her point of view were the most compelling. Her brother Biran is a politician, but he still has some hope in the system, even if his faith is stretching thinner and thinner. I like that he doesn't give up hope, ever. There's a third character whose point of view we see the story from, but she's not mentioned in the blurb. Jules is in a different system. She's a thief whose last job went wrong and she is in major trouble. We don't know...

Sunday Salon – 8/4

Sunday Salon – 8/4

I really did start this post on Sunday, but you know how that goes sometimes. Thanks to Deb at Readerbuzz for hosting The Sunday Salon. Stop over there or at the Facebook Group to participate. Week’s Highlight: We had my mom and my brother and his family out for a cookout on Saturday. I failed to take any pictures, but it was a lot of fun. Amber and I went to Phipps Conservatory on Friday. Their current show takes some of Van Gogh's paintings and reinterprets them in flowers. It is gorgeous! Reading: You can see yesterday's post for how the Reverse Readathon went for me. This week’s posts: Everything Below the Waist by Jennifer BlockMurder in the Mill-Race by E. C. R. Lorac Watching: We watched Hobbs and Shaw today. I thought it was fun. Looking forward to: There's nothing really coming up on my calendar. I should plan something fun....

Summer Reverse Readathon

Summer Reverse Readathon

The Reverse Summer Readathon starts now! I love the 8pm – 8pm eastern set-up. I won't be able to read the whole time. I'll fall asleep sometime tomight and we are hosting a cookout tomorrow, but I should get some reading time in. I’m prepared: I’ve got my snacks, I’ve got my books, I’ve got food for meals and plenty of coffee and pop. Updates will be here at the blog, instagram (@carolsnotebook), or twitter (@carolsnotebook) or none of the above if I forget to post. I'm in the middle of The Sentence is Death by Anthony Horowitz on audio and A Whisker in the Dark by Leighann Dobbs on my Kindle, so I'm starting with those. I have to take a break sometime this evening for a board game. One of our Facebook groups is having a #gameaday challenge for August. Opening Survey: What fine part of the world are you reading from today? And what time is it where you are? I'm in...

#Gameaday Challenge

#Gameaday Challenge

So, one of my Facebook groups is doing a Game-a-Day Challenge for August. I find Challenges like that a little hard to keep track of on Facebook. I know it's surprising, but I'm used to using blog posts for things like that. :) Here's my list of games. The names will link to BoardGameGeek, in case you want more info. There is no carryover from playing multiple games a previous day. Solo games count as 1 play with others; this is to encourage play with others and because solo games tend to play faster. If you miss a day, you're eliminated. Yahtzee Welcome To...
