I was having a little trouble deciding what to use for my R post. Reading is a little too obvious. I could have done Race, but I used that for K. I thought of Relay for Life, since we had a fundraiser today, but I already have the Relay for Life link on my sidebar. And then I knew, R is for one of my favorite Muppets, Rowlf the Dog.
Rowlf is a scruffy brown dog, a mutt with a rounded black nose and long floppy ears, created and originally performed by Jim Henson. Rowlf is the Muppet Theatre’s resident pianist. Though Kermit the Frog is often credited as the icon of Henson’s Muppets, Rowlf was actually the first true Muppet “star” as a recurring character on The Jimmy Dean Show, first appearing in a show telecast on September 19, 1963. He appeared in both pilots for the The Muppet Show and was part of the original cast when the showed premiered in 1976.
Rowlf is a calm and quiet fellow. He is very easygoing and a fan of classical music (particularly Beethoven) and musicals. Equally likely to be found cracking dry jokes as tickling the ivories, Rowlf is one of the few Muppets rarely flustered by the mayhem so prevalent around The Muppet Show.
lol Rowlf is quite the cute puppy, and I love his classical tastes.
Great choice! Rowlf’s wisecracks are the best!
I loved Rowlf too! What a sweet Muppet… and I remember fondly how he played the piano.
Sure I know the muppets, have watched the movie, but then never really showed the show here :/
That’s sad. Actually the original Muppet show was on when I was a kid, but I have three seasons on DVD.
awwwww!
What’s not to love
I love Rowlf. He doesn’t get much press, though. Miss Piggy seems to suck up all the oxygen.
I had no idea he was the first breakout star. I’m looking forward to sharing the Muppets with Gage. I had a soft spot for the doc and Beaker.
Good choice. Everyone loves an underdog.
Oh I’m glad you brought this up! You reminded me to look for the show on Netflix for my granddaughter.
We do Relay For Life to in my village of Perry, NY. It’s one of the largest in the area. It’s always very successful.

I love Rolf!
Love Rowlf and loved this post.
