Viva Cisco by Patrick Shannon

Viva Cisco by Patrick Shannon "Viva Cisco" is a trilogy of funny stories for kids at the Age 10-13 reading level. All three tales unfold in a land called Topopootl, which lies in a hidden valley deep in the heart of Mexico. Because of its seclusion, the inhabitants have created a society without the benefit of human contact, and they don't seem to have missed out on anything important in the absence of that dubious blessing. In fact, they probably have more pure merriment and boisterous excitement than any human community could ever conceive. Much of the credit for that, though, must be laid at the feet of Topopootl's most..uh.. stimulating citizen, one Cisco las Verde Arara del Gucigalpa. Aka, Cisco the Parrot. My thoughts: Amber, 9, loved this book. Cicso's antics and adventures made her laugh and each time we stopped for the day, she would beg to read more. She wanted to know what was going to happen next. Of course, the...

The Mystery of Alligator Swamp created by Gertrude Chandler Warner

The Mystery of Alligator Swamp (Boxcar Children Special #19) created by Gertrude Chandler Warner From the cover: Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny head down south to Louisiana and find themselves swamped in a new mystery! In the lush bayou country, the Aldens learn all about fishing, Cajun cooking, and the alligators of the swamp. When a boat is found with a bite in it, the local fishermen wonder if the legendary alligator, Gator Ann, is up to her old tricks. Impossible—unless Gator Ann is a ghost! Could Alligator Swamp be haunted? The Boxcar Children put their heads together to catch a gator! My thoughts: This was another cute Boxcar Children mystery. I've never been to Louisiana, let alone the bayou, but this book definitely made me want to visit.  Amber and I learned a lot about alligators and the swamp. I think one of the fun things about reading childrens' mysteries is that the clues are so blatant and the plots so predictable, I can usually guess what's...

The Dragon of Doom by Bruce Coville

The Dragon of Doom (Moongobble and Me #1) by Bruce Coville Description: Edward is bored with life in the little town of Pigbone. Then Moongobble the Magician and his faithful toad, Urk, move into the cottage on the hill. Soon Edward has a job helping Moongobble. And Moongobble needs a lot of help because it turns out, he is not a very good magician. (His spells keep turning things into cheese!) Edward has never been so busy -- or so happy. But then someone threatens to stop Moongobble from ever casting another spell. Edward can't let that happen. He'll do anything to save his friend's magic -- even face the deadly, dreaded Dragon of Doom! My thoughts: We actually listened to this on CD and it lasted about an hour. Amber says Coville is her favorite author to listen to in the car. I think it's because his stories are wacky and the CDs have a full cast, not just a single narrator, which makes them fun....

The Mystery of the Black Raven created by Gertrude Chandler Warner

The Mystery of the Black Raven (Boxcar Children Special #12) created by Gertrude Chandler Warner Description: The Boxcar Children are traveling to Skagway, Alaska, for the annual Four-Rock Miners' reunion. They're looking forward to a week of sightseeing and even panning for gold. But before the fun can begin, the soapstone raven and the scrapbook that grandfather is set to inherit for the year go missing. They're nothing but old souvenirs, so why would anyone want to take them? The Boxcar Children set out to find the raven's secret! My (brief) thoughts: I don't think Amber's ever going to get tired of the Boxcar Children Mysteries. I find them a little boring, but she enjoys them, so I read them with her. This one did have some interesting facts about Alaska and the Gold Rush, though. As usual, there were several suspects and clues and it was fun to try to guess who the thief actually was....

The Case of the Night-Stalking Bone Monster by John R. Erickson

The Case of the Night-Stalking Bone Monster (Hank the Cowdog #27) by John R. Erickson From the back: Join the Head of Ranch Security, his sidekick Drover, and an old pal Dogpound Ralph as they track down the elusive monster who strikes the ranch and makes off with a fortune in buried T-bones. Fearless Hank battles with Pete the barncat, woos Miss Scamper the Beagle, helps Ralph recover from a serious case of Milk of Amnesia, and risks his life to solve the mystery of the Night-Stalking Bone Monster. My thoughts: Once again, this is one of Amber's picks. It's not my favorite kids series, but it's okay. There are a lot of funny spots and plays on words.  I'm not sure if Amber caught all of the jokes, but she caught enough to think it's hilarious. I think my favorite part had to be the buzzard "Emergency Airborne Medical Services." I liked how the dogs made up the monster themselves, and then scare themselves silly worrying and barking at...

There are parts of it that are laugh out loud...
